ECONORTHWEST REPORT: ISLAND HOUSING NEEDS BECOMING EXTREME
|
As part of the research for the City's upcoming Housing Action Plan, a report was presented at the Oct. 18 City Council Study Session by ECONorthwest, based on hundreds of surveys and dozens of interviews and focus groups with island residents and business leaders.
The data highlights several key community changes in the past generation:
- Population growth has slowed over the last ten years
- Housing growth has slowed even more
- Island is losing younger people while gaining seniors (median age has increased to 50)
- Median sale price of homes has increased faster on the island than the rest of the county
- Renting a home is increasingly challenging with a decline in available rental units
