Member Testimonial
“There are many great benefits to belonging to the Glendale Chamber but one in particular has benefited me.  That is the prescription discount program that every member can get for themselves and their employees at no cost because it is a free benefit of membership. I use this card at Walgreens for my eye drop medication and all my prescriptions. Last year my annual savings exceeded $1200.00, that is over three times my dues investment. This one benefit alone has also made a difference in other areas with additional savings on eye care needs in particular. Do yourself a favor and check it out, just call the chamber to get your cards and head to your pharmacy as this card is good at 50 different companies.”

Glendale to establish subcommittee to help businesses

Cecilia Chan
Independent Newsmedia

Glendale wants to improve its climate to keep and grow the business community in the city.

City Council last week in study session agreed to move forward with the creation of a temporary subcommittee and to solicit feedback from the business community. Mayor Jerry Weiers was absent. The item is expected to come before Council at its next voting meeting.

“This sends a positive message to all business, large and small, in Glendale that we are interested in them and what they do,” said Councilwoman Joyce Clark, who came up with the idea. “It sends a positive message to businesses thinking about moving here that we are serious about improving the business climate. I’m not saying it’s bad but it can be made better.”

The one-year subcommittee will be made up of three council members and representatives from the business community who will review the city’s codes and make recommendations to the Council.

What's New in Downtown Glendale
Downtown Glendale recently saw the addition of a new restaurant - JJ’s Louisiana BBQ. JJ’s Louisiana BBQ is a small, four employee restaurant that began as a successful food truck, and has recently opened their first brick and mortar in our Centerline District, at 5601 W Glendale Avenue, Suite B.  The small restaurant space that they infilled is actually on 56th Ave just south of Glendale and had been vacant for many years.  JJ plans to steadily improve the curb appeal of the building by resurfacing and painting the exterior of the building, installing sidewalk awnings to match the character of the area, as well as installing new signage to fully rejuvenate this space in the heart of the Downtown Redevelopment District.  JJ’s Louisiana BBQ will have their grand opening ribbon cutting on May 12th at 4:00 PM.

Glendale Union High School District made Best Schools list

U.S. News & World Report announced this week that Glendale Union High School District schools have once again made the annual Best Schools list. There are nine high schools in the district, which encompasses parts of Phoenix and Glendale. Of the schools, seven ranked among the top 100 for the state of Arizona and four were nationally recognized. Sunnyslope High School received the highest ranking, at 21st place, followed by Thunderbird at 25th and Washington at 43rd.

GUHSD schools have continuously made the U.S. News & World Report – America’s Best High Schools list since 2008, adding to its impressive resume of academic achievements. In 2013, GUHSD earned the National Advanced Placement District of the Year recognition by the College Board; and the Arizona Department of Education has rated GUHSD as an “A” district.

Duet: Partners In Health & Aging In Need of
New Office Space for Staff and Services
Duet: Partners In Health & Aging—a 36-year-old Phoenix area nonprofit that promotes health and well-being through a broad range of services to homebound adults, family caregivers, faith communities, and grandparents raising grandchildren—is in need of new office space to house its staff and critical services to the community, including support groups and workshops.

Since its beginning, Church of the Beatitudes has generously housed Duet. Now though, the building Duet occupies requires extensive renovations and will be demolished in approximately four to six months.

“We could not be more grateful to the Church of the Beatitudes for housing us all of these years,” said Elizabeth Banta, executive director. “We are reaching out to local community members, businesses and supporters for viable office space leads. Our vision is to meet the growing demand for Duet’s critically needed services. Duet has the leadership, staff, growth plans and heritage needed to achieve this vision; now we need a new home.”

The nonprofit seeks 8,000 – 10,000 square feet of long-term office space for service coordination as well as service delivery (support groups and workshops). The preferred location is Phoenix between 35th Avenue and 16th Street, and Peoria to McDowell.

Banta explained that Duet is an interfaith, nonprofit organization that changes lives in partnership with more than 900 volunteers, businesses, government, faith communities, and donors. From escorted rides to grocery stores and doctor appointments, to support groups, workshops, and health promotion activities, Duet’s health and aging services bring the ability to carry on to those who are served.

For office space leads, contact Elizabeth Banta at (602) 274-5022 or [email protected] .
Funding Needed for More Schools
When children go hungry in our community, it is not by the child's own choice. United Way's plan for 2017 is to do what they can to ensure that no child in the Valley goes to school focusing on how hungry they are.

So far they've secured funding for 119 schools to have Breakfast in the Classroom . But they need your help to fund even more.
