Welcome June!!
🌞 June Fun Facts – Appalachian Style 🌞
1. June’s the Front Porch of Summer.
June marks the official start of summer (June 20th, to be exact), and in Appalachia, that means lightning bugs, mason jars full of sweet tea, and sittin’ on the porch watching the sun go down. It’s nature’s soft launch into the season of bare feet and big garden dreams.
2. Berry Pickin’ Time!
Wild strawberries and black raspberries start poppin’ up ‘round these hills.
3. Wedding Bells & Whippoorwills.
June is the most popular month for weddings—and the whippoorwill is usually the first one to sing at the ceremony. In mountain folklore, a whippoorwill calling at dusk is a sign that love is near... or at least that someone left the porch light on.
4. High Time for Holler Traditions.
From ramp festivals winding down to summer festivals gearing up, June is when the hollers come alive with music, storytelling, and more yard sales than you can shake a cornstalk at.
5. Fireflies Are the Mountain’s Fireworks.
Before the 4th of July pops off, June gives us a sneak preview—Appalachian-style. Every evening, lightning bugs light up the woods like the Lord’s own twinkle lights.
6. The Full Moon of June is the “Strawberry Moon.”
Named by Native tribes for the ripening fruit, the Strawberry Moon rises high and golden, casting just the kind of glow that makes you want to dance barefoot in the yard.
7. June Was Named After Juno, but ‘Round Here, We Just Call Her Blessed.
- Juno was the Roman goddess of marriage, but around these parts, June’s just when life starts feeling good again. Gardens are growin’, folks are smilin’, and there’s no better time to be proud of where you come from.
