Taylor ISD students heading back to school
Students and teachers are getting in gear for a new school year across the state and nation.
In Taylor, Superintendent Dr. Devin Padavil welcomed Taylor public school teachers back with a convocation ceremony on Monday. Students come back on Wednesday, Aug. 18. Click HERE for a copy of the 21-22 Taylor ISD calendar.
Padavil spoke to Rotarians on Thursday and said that Taylor schools have started the year with enrollment of 3020, up 210 from the end of the last school year. Texas public school enrollment, traditionally, doesn't reach its highest level until after Labor Day so that total may still increase.
He said increases were seen primarily on the kindergarten level where, he said, some parents may have held students out of kindergarten last year and and on the middle school level.
He also noted that a large portion of the student population is under 12, meaning they are ineligible for Covid vaccinations and that while the district will not mandate masks, they do have rapid-Covid testing available for students who show symptoms (and have parental approval). The district will notify parents if they believe students may have been exposed, he said. He added that they will not, however, ask for all classmates to quarantine.
He said when they did that last year, they ended up with zero positive tests after the potential Covid exposure.
St. Mary's Catholic School enrollment up
St. Mary's Catholic School Principal Heidi Altman said the enrollment is at a 25-year high at the school.
On the first day of the school year (Aug. 12), the school reported 269 student with a few others still enrolling. Altman said the school ended the last school year with 194 students enrolled.
She said the greatest percentage of growth has been on the recently renewed high school level where enrollment has tripled from seven students in grades 9, 10 and 11 to 24 with a 25th still completing the paperwork. St. Mary's is expected to offer all four years of high school beginning next year.
