National: Trump Temporarily Pauses Most Tariffs, but China Faces 145% as Markets Soar
President Donald Trump has paused or lowered many of his newly announced tariffs for a 90-day period, leaving a 10% baseline in place for most major trading partners while raising import taxes on Chinese goods to 125%. Because of a previous 20% tariff on fentanyl-related imports, China now faces a combined rate of 145%. Markets initially rallied on the news, with the S&P 500 soaring 9.5%—one of its biggest gains since World War II—though it remains below the level seen before Trump’s initial tariff announcements last week. The administration is preparing to negotiate “bespoke” trade deals with up to 75 nations, though critics say the president’s goals lack transparency. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that these tariffs could help address the U.S. trade deficit, but businesses and economists warn they may also raise consumer prices and escalate the trade standoff with China.
