Local/State: Chamber Backs SB 84 to Curb Predatory ADA Lawsuits
Predatory ADA lawsuits continue to burden small businesses, forcing some to close or pay steep legal fees over technical, easily correctable violations. SB 84 (Niello)—which passed the California Senate with strong bipartisan support—would give businesses 120 days to fix accessibility issues before lawsuits for damages can proceed.
Our Chamber supports SB 84 and is urging Assemblymember Ash Kalra, Chair of the Judiciary Committee, to let the bill move forward. He has expressed reservations—and time is short. SB 84 must pass the Assembly by August 31 to remain active this session. Let’s protect accessibility—and protect our small businesses.
We Need You To Take Action:

📞 Capitol Office: (916) 319-2025 | San Jose Office: (408) 286-2535
We’ve also published an ADA Compliance Guide for Los Gatos businesses and are working with our Silicon Valley Chamber partners to advocate for meaningful reform.

State: CalChamber Opposes AB 566 for Harming Small Business Advertising
AB 566 would mandate a global opt-out setting for internet users, blocking third-party data sharing across websites. A new report finds it could cost California $3.6B in ad revenue and 73,000 jobs, hitting small businesses hardest by limiting access to affordable digital marketing tools. Click here for more information.

National: Jobless Claims Rise
Initial unemployment claims rose to 235,000 last week—up 11,000—with the 4-week average also climbing. Insured unemployment hit 1.97 million, the highest since 2021. California saw one of the largest increases in new claims (+741), with an insured unemployment rate of 2.1%, above the national average. This slight but steady uptick may signal early softening in the labor market—important context for hiring, retention, and wage planning. Click here for more information.
