National: U.S. Economy Contracts in Q1, Signaling Caution for Local Businesses
The U.S. economy shrank by 0.5% in the first quarter of 2025, a revision from an earlier 0.2% figure, according to the Commerce Department. The decline was driven by weaker consumer spending and a spike in imports ahead of anticipated tariffs. A slowing economy may signal reduced discretionary spending, impacting retail, dining, and service sectors. Business owners should monitor consumer trends and prepare for potential softening in demand heading into the second half of the year.

Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) is co-hosting the 7th Annual Certify & Amplify webinar with MCE on Friday, July 18th at 10:30 am PST. This is a free, virtual event that aims to help businesses across California learn how to get certified in the state’s contracting clearinghouses. Businesses that are women-owned, minority-owned, person with a disability-owned, or LGBTQ-owned can certify in the CPUC’s Supplier Diversity database, while small business can certify with the Department of General Services to be included on the state’s contracting Cal eProcure.
Representatives from the CPUC, Department of General Services, and one of MCE’s certified vendors will all be sharing tips and benefits on certification.
Participants do not need to be a customer of MCE or SVCE to attend so please share this event with your networks and encourage businesses to register to learn more. Even if registrants can’t make the event live, we encourage folks to register to receive the recording and materials.
Please reach out to Emily Muniz (emily.muniz@svcleanenergy.org) with any questions.
