Town: Los Gatos Evaluates Federal Funding Freeze’s Impact on Local Services

At the March 18, 2025, Town Council meeting, residents urged officials to safeguard local education, DEI, and emergency management programs threatened by a federal funding freeze under President Trump’s executive orders. The freeze could jeopardize nearly $7.7 million in pending grants for wildfire preparedness, libraries, and museums. In a 4–1 vote, Council members agreed to regularly review federal actions’ fiscal impacts and consider local responses. Town Manager Chris Constantin noted that hiring an emergency manager will be halted and reserves may be tapped to close budget gaps. While many voiced opposition to the cuts, some residents favored reduced federal spending. Read more here.

National: Federal Open Market Committee Economic Projections Issued 3/19/25

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell anticipates moderate growth in 2025, with inflation gradually converging on the Fed’s 2% target and interest rates likely to ease if conditions remain stable. However, he warns unforeseen developments could reshape the outlook.

Key Considerations for Businesses

Slower but Steady Growth: The Fed projects GDP growth of 1.7% in 2025, rising to 1.8% by 2026–27—below 2024’s 2.8% rate but still positive.

Tighter Labor Market: Unemployment could dip from 4.4% to 4.3%, remaining stable yet above recent historic lows.

Tariffs Fuel Higher Prices: Tariff-driven “goods inflation” is difficult to parse from normal cost increases; be prepared for potential escalation or retaliation.

Inflation Easing: Gradual cooling toward 2% may offer relief for budgeting over time.

Interest Rate Opportunities: Rates may ease from 3.9% to 3.1% by 2027, opening doors for expansion, refinancing, or debt restructuring.

Stay Flexible: Powell cautions that unforeseen events could change everything, so keep contingency plans ready.
