National: Holiday Outlook Mixed as Job Gains Hold but Caution Rises

U.S. job growth came in stronger than expected, but several indicators suggest more cautious consumer behavior heading into the holidays. While steady hiring supports household spending, the U.S. trade deficit narrowed mainly because imports fell, which can be a sign that domestic demand is cooling. At the same time, the Federal Reserve remains divided on whether to cut rates, keeping borrowing costs elevated for households and small businesses.

Small businesses should plan for a moderate holiday season, not a surge. Households are still spending, but they are increasingly value conscious, so it will be important to emphasize targeted promotions, clear value messaging, lean inventories, and repeat-visit incentives like gift card or bounce-back promos.
