National: Hiring Weakens, Fed Signals Further Rate Cuts May Be Needed
Fed Chair Jerome Powell acknowledged that the slowdown in hiring suggests “economic vulnerabilities,” reinforcing expectations that the Fed may cut rates further this year. Meanwhile, the Fed’s Beige Book noted that many firms were reducing headcounts amid weakening demand, especially in lower-income segments, and that economic activity was largely flat. For small businesses, lower hiring and soft demand could reduce sales growth, and potential rate cuts may ease financing costs, but with a lag. Click here and here for more information.

Since Oct 1, Treasury estimates the shutdown is costing up to $15B per week; key reports—including September CPI—are delayed to Oct 24, USDA has paused major crop/export data, and Treasury says the closure is already hitting the economy. With macro data dark, small businesses face greater forecasting risk; expect slower permitting and approvals and use caution on budgeting, pricing, and credit decisions.
