Town: Saratoga Stays with Sheriff's Office for Police Services
On October 7, the Saratoga City Council voted 4–1 to stay with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, its police provider for nearly 70 years, instead of contracting with the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department starting November 2027. The LGMS proposal, about $9.7 million a year, was estimated to save Saratoga $2.7 million annually. The Los Gatos Town Council had unanimously supported exploring the partnership, which Police Chief Jamie Field said could help spread the department’s fixed costs. LGMS Police service to Los Gatos businesses and to Los Gatos and Monte Sereno residents continues unchanged. Click here for more information.

State: California Expands Bereavement Leave to Include a Designated Person
Effective January 1, 2027, SB 1149 expands California’s bereavement leave law to include a “designated person”—someone related to the employee by blood or whose association with the employee is equivalent to a family relationship. Eligible employees may take up to five days of job-protected bereavement leave following the person’s death. The law applies to employers with five or more employees, who may limit designated-person leave to one person per 12-month period. Employers may need to update employee handbooks and bereavement leave policies before January 1, 2027. Click here and here for more information.
