State: Ads Using AI-Generated People Will Need a Label
Starting January 1, 2027, businesses that run ads featuring a realistic, AI-created person or voice will need to say so clearly. Governor Newsom signed SB 1050 into law on September 16. The label must read close to "This performance features a synthetic performer" or "No human performer is depicted." The law covers video, audio and online ads where the made-up figure plays a key role, such as a spokesperson or narrator. Using AI only to translate a real person's words is exempt, and violations count as false advertising under state law. Many businesses now use AI tools for social media videos and voiceovers, so those using them in ads should watch for the new requirement. Click here for more information.

State: Governor Declares Statewide Emergency to Prepare for El Niño
Governor Newsom declared a statewide emergency on September 21 to get California ready for El Niño storms this fall and winter. Federal forecasters give a very strong El Niño better than a 90% chance, and a 75% chance it could reach historic strength. The order directs state agencies to stage sandbags, pumps and other supplies, prepare roads, ready the National Guard and speed up permits for flood-prevention work. In Los Gatos, heavy rain can close Highway 17 and hillside roads, knock out power and damage property, which affects customers, employees and deliveries. Businesses should keep an eye on forecasts and sign up for Santa Clara County's AlertSCC emergency notices. Click here and here for more information.
