Annual Chamber Awards, State Business Survey, Member Video Feature, New Member Spotlight & More
December 2020
There is a generational cliche in which the prior generation makes an assumption that the current one is a bit more entitled and/or softer than they were, exemplified in the phrase "everyone gets a trophy". Perhaps youth sports overdoes it at times with participation trophys for all, but if we had magical Chamber powers here, we'd hand out a trophy to everyone just for enduring this past year - with grace, empathy, and a willingness to sacrifice for the good of everyone else. It's been hard - for those that provide essential services, for those that have gotten sick, for those struggling through profound challenges to their business and livelihood, and for all of us who miss interacting with each other freely and easily. We now know that things will improve at some point next year with vaccines on their way, but we will need to stay vigilant in the coming months.

While we can't give an award to everybody, we will be thrilled to present our annual business/organization awards to 5 deserving Chamber Members in the following categories at our virtual Annual Meeting in January:

  • New Business of the Year Award (open for less than 18 months)
  • Non-Profit Organization of the Year Award
  • Small Business of the Year Award (less than 25 employees)
  • Large Business of the Year Award (more than 25 employees)
  • Business Resilience Award

Nominations for these awards are being requested through December 31st from the membership, from which the winners will be selected. To make a nomination of a fellow Chamber member, please CLICK HERE.

This year we will present the Awards as part of the Annual Membership Meeting, to be held virtually on Thursday, January 21st from 8am to 9am. To sign up to attend this event, please CLICK HERE. More details and an agenda for the meeting is available at the link and will be shared via email as well soon. Thank you for all your ongoing efforts to keep yourselfand everyone else around you safe. Wishing you and yours a restful, joyous, and safe Holiday season!

Maine's "Moving Forward" Business Survey

As we head into 2021 and likely another couple of quarters at least of ongoing pandemic challenges, it will be helpful for our Maine leaders and the new State Legislature to have an up-to-date understanding of the current business environment and organization's priorities and needs. The following survey has been developed by the Maine State Chamber, MACCE, MTA, and others to capture the thoughts, concerns and ideas of our small, medium and large enterprises. The results will help provide a collective outlook regarding priorities and what is needed going forward.

Amtrak Downeaster Anniversary

Today marks the 19th Anniversary of Amtrak Downeaster service between Portland, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts. Since 2001, more than 65,000 Downeaster trains have operated, transporting more than 7 million passengers. The Downeaster transports a diverse cross-section of riders who travel for a variety of purposes including commuter, college students, senior citizens, school kids on educational trips, sports fans, beach goers and tourists and more.

Many improvements have been made since service began including reduced travel time, increased frequency and expanded service to Freeport and Brunswick.  This past year has had its challenges, but Amtrak Downeaster adapted and continues to operate with an enhanced focus on passenger safety and comfort. Congratulations go out to the entire NNEPRA Team, thank you for everything you do for our communities, and we're looking forward to more great things to come.
