OUT & ABOUT
Donna Visits the Torrance Rose Float Association

This past week, I was provided the opportunity to attend the 2017 Rose Parade Float Participants kickoff meeting with members of the Torrance Rose Float Association Board of Directors. Bev Findley, President of the Torrance Rose Float Association, invited me to share in this remarkable day.

Arriving at the Rose Bowl, and entering into the beautifully decorated meeting room, I felt so proud to live in the City of Torrance and to have our city represented by a float each year. I learned that the mission statement of the Torrance Rose Float Association is to preserve the tradition of delivering joy, beauty and pageantry from our hometown to people across the globe through participation in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on a day when the world is full of the hope of renewal.

The kickoff meeting included remarks by several individuals, as well as panel participants. I quickly learned how members of the Torrance Rose Float Association must juggle fundraising, float decorating, marketing, advertising and so much more. Each board member was enthusiastic and listened intently to the speakers.

An award ceremony and trophy presentation will be scheduled by Space Command in Colorado Springs later this year.

Economy Pushes Through Global Turbulence; State Still Among Fastest Growing in U.S.

U.S. economic output has slowed to a crawl over the last three quarters—averaging less than a 1% pace of growth compared to 3% in the previous six quarters. Despite these disappointing results, prognosticators of the economy have, for the most part, not reduced their growth outlook for the nation by much. Most are still looking for rates in the 2% to 2.5% range.

Governor Signs CalChamber-Supported Bill Improving Disability Access

Governor Edmund Brown Jr. has signed a California Chamber of Commerce-supported bill that will help businesses assess whether commercial rental property is compliant with disability access laws.

AB 2093 (Steinorth; R-Rancho Cucamonga) ensures that owners and tenants are aware of any construction-related access violations and therefore have the opportunity to resolve any violation before a lawsuit is filed by requiring clarity in commercial property leases regarding whether the property has been inspected by a Certified Access Specialist (CASp) and any CASp reports.

The bill was signed by Governor Brown on September 16 and took effect immediately.
