Join us for TorranceSERVES and Take the Pledge!
by Jamie Le
On January 18, we launched the 3rd Annual Torrance Serves Service Leaders Celebration which runs through February 21. Aligned with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, this campaign is intended to celebrate the service leaders of past and present and empower our community to bring volunteers safely together for COVID safe service projects that honor the spirit of giving, public service, and volunteerism.  As part of the celebration, we are asking the community to pledge community service hours as a team or as an individual to help us reach our goal of 150,000 pledged hours. These hours can be completed any time during 2021. We are currently at 34% of our goal.

This is a "feel good" campaign based on the honor system and pledging takes 1 minute! Just visit www.TorranceCA.Gov/PLEDGE You can leave a set of You Got Served Postcards to encourage the recipient to complete a community service project or perform a random act of kindness. For more information about TorranceSERVES or if you have a COVID Safe volunteer event you would like us to feature please visit www.TorranceCA.Gov/SERVE.

CalChamber Urges Pull Back of Emergency COVID Rules
The California Chamber of Commerce urged the California Legislature earlier this month to correct a series of costly COVID-19 workplace mandates imposed through an emergency regulation order.

The regulation, issued by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) late in 2020, requires employers to take a number of extraordinary steps that include providing costly unlimited paid time off for workers. It further creates an overly broad testing scheme that ignores the realities of current testing availability.

In the letter sent to legislators on February 1, the CalChamber argues that while safety practices in the workplace have had to change as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the new safety restrictions are not feasible for employers—especially small businesses struggling in the midst of a pandemic that has threatened to bankrupt them. Take the City of Torrance Wayfinding Survey
The City of Torrance needs your help to identify focus areas for wayfinding in Torrance by contributing to the interactive map. They want to find out what destinations are important to you! Take the survey.

Wayfinding signage is placed in public places to help people find their way to a destination. You may have seen wayfinding signage near popular visitor destinations, in downtown areas, or even in the airport or at the mall. Wayfinding signage is designed to help people safely and conveniently reach their ultimate destination and is especially important for those traveling on foot, by bicycle, or on transit. Learn more.
Celebrating Black History
Clifton L. Johnson, past Chairman of the Board and Chair Emeritus of the Chamber’s Black History Celebration (far right) pauses to extend appreciation to members of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first Black military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps (AAC), a precursor of the U.S. Air Force. Trained at the Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama, they flew more than 15,000 individual sorties in Europe and North Africa during World War II. Their impressive performance earned them more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses and helped encourage the eventual integration of the U.S. armed forces.

The mission of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., is to preserve the historical legacy of the first African American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces in World War II.
The Tuskegee Airmen were invited each year to the Black History Celebration and were acknowledged by those in attendance. This photo is from the early 2000’s.
