Leslie Cortez to Receive "Athena Award" at Women's Leadership Luncheon
The Athena Award honors a woman who best exemplifies exceptional professional achievement, devotion to community service and generosity in actively assisting other women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership style.

Leslie Cortez, who is actively involved with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce in a multitude of ways, has been named this year's Athena Award recipient. Cortez will be honored at the upcoming Women's Leadership Luncheon on Wednesday, April 4th.

California Supreme Court Issues Worker Friendly Overtime Ruling
Overtime pay in California is based on the employee’s “regular rate of pay,” which is not always an employee’s normal hourly wage and must include almost all forms of pay that the employee receives. But how do you calculate the regular rate of pay when an employee receives both an hourly wage and a flat sum bonus – such as an extra $15 for working a weekend shift?

This week, the  California Supreme Court ruled  that an employer must calculate the regular rate of pay by dividing the employee’s total compensation by the number of nonovertime hours an employee worked during the pay period, rather than the total number of hours the employee worked, including overtime hours (Alvarado v Dart Container Corporation of California). TACC Members Engage Local Youth During "Ask the Experts" Day

The LEAD program is mirrored after Leadership Torrance. Students have visited various City facilities, corporations, non profits and points of interest over the past 6 months. This week, students met our distinguished guests who shared their career path, education/experience, responsibilities of their job and some words of guidance on leadership and the importance of pursuing one's passion. The Leadership Torrance class of 2018 also paired up with the students during lunch and exchanged thoughts and impactful insights on personal and career development.

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce also extends sincere gratitude to our esteemed panel of experts, who took time out of their day to inspire the LEAD students: Patrick J. TACC Women in Business Committee Group Grows Leaps and Bounds
This morning, the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed its Women in Business group; which meets on the second Friday of every month at 8am (please verify meeting dates at www.torrancechamber.com/events). The group discusses various topics designed to spark lively and engaging interaction. Thank you to Theresa Mack and Charlene Nishimura for their efforts in organizing the monthly committee.
