Congratulations to the Japan Business Association
|

The Japan Business Association (JBA) virtually celebrated their 60th anniversary this past Friday evening. The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce has enjoyed a longtime partnership with the JBA. Each year, for the past 22 years, the chamber partnered with JBA for what is known as the ‘Grand Mixer’. Although an event did not take place in 2020 due to Covid-19, the chamber is hopeful the ‘Grand Mixer’ will return in late 2021 or early 2022. I was pleased to join the virtual event and be a part of the 60th year anniversary celebration.
Several individuals provided words of welcome and congratulations including Toshimitsu Motegi, Japan/s Minister of Foreign Affairs; Senate Majority Leader Robert Hertzberg; Assembly member Al Muratsuchi; Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles; Pat Furey, Mayor of Torrance; Muto Akira, Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles and Yuichi Mitsumori, President of JBA Southern California. Duperron to Provide Comments in Support of SB15 (Portantino) at
Senate Housing Committee
|
|
California has a housing emergency. According to the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), from 2015 – 2025, approximately 1.8 million new housing units are needed to meet projected population and household growth, or 180,000 new homes annually.
The imbalance between supply and demand has driven California housing costs to be the highest in the nation, with an average median home price now 2.5 times the U.S. median. These high prices have prohibited occupations like teachers, nurses, public safety officers and younger professionals the ability to afford owning a home, essential for building a stronger and vibrant economy. Chamber Convenes Members from Health Care Industry
|
|
Leadership from senior assisted living facilities and those who provide in home care for seniors recently convened for a roundtable to discuss health and safety, Covid-19 vaccine availability, family/visitor interaction and marketing and exposure.
Facilitated by Donna Duperron, President and CEO, attendees were asked to respond to questions and to share with each other. “There is a lot of goodwill between all of us participating on this virtual meeting. We must continue to work, partner and collaborate to make our industry even stronger”, said Terese Campbell, Seasons Memory Care.
Marketing and exposure were noted as the two biggest issues for this industry. Roxanne Trimper, chamber’s communication coordinator, is assembling a one-page fact sheet which will provide information about each chamber business who participated in the roundtable. This fact sheet will be emailed to all chamber members this week.

The Torrance Chamber of Commerce has been behind us 100% this past year. They reached out to us after the shut down and I was able to share that we had all our events and weddings had cancelled or postponed and the Los Angeles Flower Mart had closed their doors for the 1st time in 100 years. No jobs, no product.
We pivoted and pulled on another life skill and started making masks, as there was a shortage in the USA. The Chamber put the word out and orders came rolling in. My sewing machines were called up and vases and floral cutters were benched. Because of this the Chamber recognized Flower Duet with the 2020 Innovation and Design Award and we were honored.
The Chamber has ensured we, as Small Business Owners are aware of Grant and Loan opportunities available to help us through this year of uncertainty. We are looking forward to working with our blooms again and providing floral designs for the Chamber and our community once again.
