Oh, What a Relief It Isn’t – AB 5 and the B2B Exemption
The new law governing independent contracting, AB 5, includes what can be described as a business-to-business (B2B) exemption. But a close examination of the actual language shows that the B2B exemption is virtually inoperable. The author of AB 5 consistently states that the B2B carve-out provides relief to freelancers and sole proprietors to continue operating in the state and not be subject to AB 5’s ABC test. However... Bubble Watch: California business growth slows by half in a year
California economic growth, as measured by gross domestic product, has been all-but halved this year. In 2019’s first nine months, California’s business output grew at a 2.3% average annual rate, No. 21 among the states. GDP is the broadest measure of economic activity. "Why I chose to be a part of Leadership Torrance"
I sat down with Karen Pryor, Pryority Lending Group Inc., to hear why she wanted to invest her time, finances, and efforts into the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Torrance p rogram. Sitting across the table from me, Karen opened up the conversation with some general thoughts on the program. "I had heard about it from some friends around last year some time. And, what I heard from them was that Leadership Torrance the best program they've ever done. I started to think to myself, well, I have already gotten myself involved in quite a few things at the Chamber in order to develop contacts and promote my business. But, if I'm truly going to try and get the most out of my membership with the Chamber, I might as well do the most I can!" She continued, "In addition to that, I realized I had been in management positions most of my career, but I've never been fully trained for them. I realized that everything I've learned about leadership has been self-taught. I thought to take the dive and see how much I can grow my leadership through this structured program."

"I've also lived in the City of Torrance for 31 years and I don't really know a whole lot about it. I believe the best way to have an effect on a city is to actually know what's going on in your own community. And so far, just by being in this program for a short time, I am already meeting different kinds of people, learning about why they came to Torrance, and hearing their personal stories."

After being asked if there is anything specific she is looking forward to, she responded with a smile, exclaiming, "I'm super excited about going to the Torrance Fire Department and getting to slide down the fireman's pole!" She laughed. "It's also just going to be a great opportunity to develop deeper friendships with the people in my class, as many alumni have attested to that benefit." by Hannah Talley, Communications Coordinator, 1/23/2020
