Out and About

Donna and her husband are greeted by the Skunk Train conductor. In the early 1880s, lumbermen C.R. Johnson, Calvin Stewart, and James Hunter joined together to expand timber operations in Mendocino County. By 1885 the Fort Bragg Railroad was formed to make transporting lumber easier. This would form the foundation of what would eventually become the California Western Railroad, more commonly known as The Skunk.

Donna Visits Northern California

For the past ten days, I had the incredible opportunity to take a road trip up Highway 1 to the 101 all the way to Eureka. With the assistance of the Mendocino County Chamber of Commerce, we were able to select campgrounds and points of interest to visit.

In addition to visiting lighthouses, riding a horse and carriage through downtown Eureka, taking train rides through the Redwoods, and a boat tour of Humboldt Bay, I was able to meet several small business owners and talk to them about their local economy. Staffing shortages, price of goods, homelessness, and inflation were items that were top of mind to business owners.

Chamber Acknowledges Allen, Bradford and Muratsuchi

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce has sent letters of appreciation to Senator Ben Allen, Senator Steven Bradford and Assembly member Al Muratsuchi for supporting meaningful reforms to the Private Attorney General Act (PAGA). “The reforms will have a tremendous positive impact on California employers while preserving strong labor protections for employees,” said Jennifer Barrera, President & CEO, California Chamber of Commerce. “We are proud to help deliver this meaningful reform to minimize egregious shakedown lawsuits against employers.

L.A. Board of Supervisors Places Half-Cent Sales Tax on November Ballot

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion to place the "Homelessness Services and Affordable Housing Transactions and Use Tax Ordinance," known as Measure A, on the November 2024 ballot. If approved, Measure A would increase the expiring quarter-cent sales tax to a half-cent. While the Chamber consistently supports initiatives addressing housing affordability and homelessness, it opposes the current ballot measure due to the absence of a sunset clause, inadequate accountability provisions, and the lack of a fiscal impact study.
