From Our Mayor

Trunk or Treating the Safe Alternative

We have all seen way too many events canceled this year, but for understandable reasons. As so many of us struggle to maintain our sanity through it all, it is easy to forget that there are children who are having to go through all of this with us.
Many of these children have had their lives impacted as much if not more than any of us. They will soon be returning to school, well at least 50% of them at a time, while the other 50% attend online. However, their lives have changed just as much as any of us and to top it off they get to deal with us parents who are going through these crazy times!
With all of that in mind it is with great pleasure that I see our friends at The Mall will be continuing with the Trunk or Treat this Halloween.
There will be safety measures in place, but still our local children will be able to wear their costumes, see their friends in costumes and hopefully take home a substantial amount of treats. Side note, please no tricks this year. I feel like we have all endured enough for one year!
Safety measures include having all children going in the same route as barriers and volunteers help to keep them socially distanced and heading in the right direction. Those passing out treats (Candy!!!) will be provided gloves as well as a table to place the treats on so there is no hand to hand contact. Some of us will be putting candy in baggies for the Trunk or Treaters to easily grab. There will be disposable masks available for all who do not have one. There will also be hand sanitizer available.
Decorating your Car/trunk is highly recommended! Let’s do our best to provide our children with a fun atmosphere. You will be able to park and set up your area at 4 pm. Cars will be kept 12 feet apart as to help ensure social distancing as well as a table for the candy to be displayed. The “Treating” will be from 5 pm-7 pm. If you would like to take part and reserve a space for your ‘Trunk”, please contact Linda 708-609-7216 or
Susan 760-399-7866
We realize that many of you will not be able to attend or take part. Whether it is for safety measures or prior engagements, we would still welcome all help possible. If you would care to donate any PPE or treats (Candy!!!) to the cause, Ellen Fitzpatrick will accept donations weekdays from 10 am to 2 pm at Graphics You Can Trust located in the Mall
and I will also accept donations at Carlee’s during regular business hours.
Although I am here during the week before 9 am if you would like to drop anything off and avoid crowds.
Thank you all in advance for your participation, help and just basic care for our community! I’ve said it many times, nothing makes me prouder to be a resident of Borrego Springs than to see the way this community comes together in times of need and
for each other.
Thank you, Andy Macuga Honorary Mayor of Borrego Springs

The pandemic has many of us working or studying from home, so an earthquake preparedness drill could look very different this year. Nonprofit Organizations Encouraged to Apply for Grants
County Employees Help Charitable Organizations with Annual Grants

The San Diego County Employees’ Charitable Organization (CECO) is now accepting applications for 2021 CECO grants. Grant applications must be received by Monday, Nov. 2.

Since 1956, CECO has funded local nonprofit programs with the mission of lending a hand toward addressing the diverse needs in San Diego. CECO is funded by the generosity of the employees and retirees of the County of San Diego. One hundred percent of contributions are redirected to the local community.

CECO grants funds towards tangible goods such as equipment, furnishings and other durable goods that directly benefit the population being served by the program. A complete list of prior grant recipients, as well as 2021 grant instructions and application can be found at sdceco.org.

In addition, CECO will be hosting a free virtual "Grants 101 Workshop" on Thursday, Oct. 8 from noon to 1:30 p.m. for community members to learn the basics of grant writing, as well as a general overview of CECO's 2021 grant application. RSVP online.

Questions pertaining to the grant application and/or allocation process can be directed to sdceco@sdcounty.ca.gov.
