Out & About
with TACC President & CEO Donna Duperron
Lee Tinnesand (right) and Jesus Aguilasocho, Jr. (left)
Donna visits Halverson, Stone & Myers Mortuary
Halverson, Stone & Myers Mortuary has been an important part of the Torrance community since its founding in 1959. With a majestic 50-foot copper steeple, the beautiful architecture helped place the facility on the Historic Homes Walk. As I entered the mortuary, I was greeted by Lee Tinnesand and Jesus Aguilasocho, Jr.
Both Lee and Jesus are professional and extremely knowledgeable. As we sat at a beautiful table in a soothing room, they talked me through the importance of pre-planning a funeral or cemetery arrangements which will provide peace of mind to the individual and their loved ones. "It is important for an individual to reflect on what's important to them when they are alive," explained Lee.

SB 3 Passes through Legislature at Lightning Speed
In an unexpected turn of events, SB 3 - the $15 Minimum Wage Increase - powered through the legislature at lightning speed this week, passing the Assembly and the Senate today. The legislation now awaits the signature of Gov. Jerry Brown.
The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) has been relentlessly fighting this bill for its members for many months, and submitted another letter just yesterday to contest the legislation, which will cause strain on so many member businesses.
Assemblyman David Hadley, who also objects SB 3, had the following words to say: https://ad66.asmrc.org/video/hadley-sb3
The TACC will keep its members up-to-date over the next week as the results of this story continue to unfold. Follow the TACC on Twitter at @torrancechamber to stay in the loop.

Join the Race!
The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce and UCLA Health were proud to announce last week that a brand-new event, the Armed Forces Day 5k Run/Walk, in tribute to Torrance's very own Louis Zamperini, is coming to Torrance! The very first runner just signed up earlier this week - and we hope you do too!
The morning of the Armed Forces Day Parade will begin this year with the 5k Run/Walk, making May 21st a day full of activities that will truly bring the Torrance and South Bay community together.

The 5k will take place at 8:00am May 21st before the start of the annual Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade. Join us at the Del Amo Fashion Center parking lot on Madrona Ave between Carson St and Fashion Way for the start of the race!

Secretary of State Invites Torrance-based Businesses to Help Increase Civic Engagement
Alex Padilla, California Secretary of State, is inviting Torrance-based businesses to join his nonpartisan "Democracy at Work" program. Businesses can partner with the Secretary of State's office to encourage greater civic participation through increased voter registration and voter turnout. A business leader can play an important role by reaching out to employees and customers, encouraging them to register to vote.

Legendary Luncheon series continues to show that personal stories resonate
Yesterday's Legendary Luncheon with Vic Edelbrock was such a treat. Vic's stories, which ranged from the early days of Edelbrock, to his racing adventures, manufacturing and keeping Edelbrock products made in the USA, and his touch points on the future kept the audience thoroughly engaged.
Thank you Vic for sharing your story, and thank you to the Edelbrock Family and Edelbrock Foundation for sharing Vic's Garage so the community could enjoy this event. Big thank you also to Bob and Laurie Brandt of Red Car Brewery & Restaurant for providing the fantastic food and moderating the interview questions.
The Chamber looks forward to hosting future Legendary Luncheon events!
