Out & About
with TACC President & CEO Donna Duperron
Alex See (left), owner of King Shabu Shabu, with two key employees.
Donna visits King Shabu Shabu
Greeted by Alex See, owner, I immediately felt welcomed and was eager to learn more about King Shabu Shabu. Shabu Shabu is a type of Japanese cuisine comprised of cooking vegetables and meat in a steaming pot of water right at your table. Traditionally, the primary meat cooked is beef, but modern cuisine has evolved to include salmon, mussels, shrimp, pork, and three grades of beef: Angus ribeye choice, Angus ribeye prime, and Wagyu.
As I looked around the 29 stations, I notices so many people really enjoying the process of Shabu Shabu. The restaurant is extremely clean and provides a warm and relaxing atmosphere.

Educators Learn What Will Get Their Students Hired... or Fired
Twenty-eight Torrance Unified School District teachers and administrators met yesterday for their fourth session of "Educators in the Workplace." This program, hosted by the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, establishes a vital link between classroom learning and the 21st   century workforce.

Assemblyman Hadley Fights for a TACC Priority
Torrance's Assemblyman David Hadley authored AB 2026, addressing one of the Chamber's Legislative Priorities: reasonable improvement of the California Environmental Quality Act. While TACC supports CEQA's intent to protect the environment and to ensure the public is allowed to participate in the process, the overly complex environmental law is often misused by self-serving parties to protect their own economic interests, sometimes hindering needed development projects in the state for non-environmental reasons. AB 2026 would have curbed this issue by requiring petitioners in CEQA lawsuits to identify themselves. Unfortunately, the bill failed to pass out of committee this week; however, TACC appreciates Assemblyman Hadley's solid work on this issue. You can view the remarks he gave during a recent committee meeting in Sacramento by watching this video.

Relentless Forward Progress
Congratulations to TACC Chairwoman of the Board Jac Folkert and her husband D for again completing the Boston Marathon! Jac has inspired the Chamber this year with the runner's motto "Relentless Forward Progress" -- a theme that's been central to the TACC's many accomplishments this past year.
Jac was also a big inspiration for the inception of the Armed Forces Day 5k Run/Walk. Her company, UCLA Health, is sponsoring and co-hosting the event with the TACC.
     Thanks, Jac!
Keeping up with Leadership Torrance
Leadership Torrance toured the Port of Los Angeles last week. The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach are so very important to our region, our state, and our country. A majority of the raw materials and goods we consume and depend on comes through our ports, and businesses locate to Torrance and the South Bay region of Los Angeles County due to close proximity to the ports. A major factor in economic vitality, the sheer size of the vessels and thousands of containers being unloaded around the clock are an unbelievable sight to see.
Thank you to Mark Waronek, LT Alumni, for scheduling the tour for us, and Torrance Mayor Patrick J. Furey, Torrance Councilwoman Heidi Ann Ashcraft (not pictured), and Hawthorne School Board Member Sergio Mortara (not pictured) for your participation.
