Supervisor Knabe Delivers Memorable Address to Torrance Business Community
|
Long-time LA County Fourth District Supervisor Don Knabe addressed the Torrance Business Community for the final time at TACC's annual Lunch with Our Leader event this past week. In what was a memorable address, Supervisor Knabe highlighted efforts made toward his two priority issues: Child Sex Trafficking and Safe Surrender, which is a program that allows someone to surrender an infant within 72 hours of birth, as long as the infant shows no signs of abuse. The event also allowed for the Torrance business community to express its appreciation to Supervisor Knabe for the years of dedicated service and support to the Torrance community. If you missed the event, read the wrap-up of it in the Daily Breeze. You can also watch a replay of the event on Torrance CitiCable3 here.

Seven Remarkable Leaders to be Recognized at Black History Celebration
|
Join the Chamber community for next week's Black History Celebration! The theme for this year's event is "Breaking Barriers...Paving the Way to a Brighter Future."
"
Those who have been to the event before know that the community has enjoyed a tradition of paying tribute to African Americans - past, present and up and coming - for over almost two decades," says Tracy Underwood, Chair of the Black History committee. "We come together annually to recognize the contributions of African Americans who have made a difference on the world stage as well as those that have changed lives in our local community. This year is no exception as we celebrate the many achievements of those being honored at this event."

Paid Sick Leave Questions Continue to Trouble Members
|
During TACC's recent Labor Law Update event, many TACC members had questions about paid sick leave (PSL) compliance; TACC members are not alone. Over a one-month span, the California Chamber of Commerce (CalChamber) conducted nine seminars, speaking with hundreds of employers throughout the state. Like TACC's seminar, CalChamber's seminars had one topic that dominated: questions surrounding California's mandatory PSL law, which took effect last year and required employers to provide PSL to their employees beginning July 1, 2015. CalChamber has published a must-read article to address many of the questions surrounding PSL.

Members Concerned, Confused About Minimum Wage in Torrance
|
Over the past few months, TACC staff has fielded questions from several members about minimum wage in Torrance. The two most common questions have been: (1) Are businesses in the City of Torrance subject to LA County's $15 minimum wage ordinance? and (2) Will the City of Torrance follow nearby cities that have raised minimum wage? The TACC answers both questions here.

Vote to Support Matson, Dick Rossberg Memorial Fund
|
Vote today for TACC Government Affairs Coordinator Brandon Matson as he is in the final stages of preparing for this year's Dancing with the South Bay Stars (DWSBS) event hosted by the Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation. Matson will be dancing to fundraise for TACC's "Dick Rossberg Memorial Fund," which was created by TACC in honor of the late Dick Rossberg, who served the Torrance community for many years to include two terms on the Torrance City Council and a term as president for the Torrance Chamber. One of Rossberg's passions was to engage Torrance youth in government and business. To celebrate Rossberg's life, TACC worked with Rossberg's son Kirk, who currently serves on the Board at TACC, to establish a fund within the Chamber's Foundation to receive donations made in Rossberg's memory. Donations made to the fund are used to help provide opportunities for TUSD schools to participate in business and government activities run through the Foundation. To vote for Brandon and/or buy a ticket to DWSBS on Feb. 27th, click here.
