Out & About
with TACC President & CEO Donna Duperron
Donna visits a LEGO Bricks Exhibit by Artist
Sean Kenney at the South Bay Botanic Garden
This past Saturday was a gorgeous day in the south bay. South Coast Botanic Garden hosted the only Los Angeles area appearance of Sean Kenney's Nature Connects displays made entirely from LEGO bricks. As was I driving there I became excited, as I have always liked to build with LEGOs.
South Coast Botanic Garden is an 87-acre public botanic garden containing over 200,000 plants from around the world. The garden was created on a sanitary landfill in 1959 by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors at the request of a Citizens' group. Specialty gardens include the Japanese Garden, Fuchsia Garden, Children's Garden and the 2-acre formal James J. White Rose Garden. A man-made lake at the center of the garden attracts several species of waterfowl. The garden is an oasis for over 200 species of birds that make their homes at the garden or just use the garden as a stop in their annual migration.

Important LA County Economic Forecast Report Published by LAEDC
The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) presented its 2016-17 Economic Forecast and Industry Outlook report for LA County in front of over 500 guests at the Omni Hotel in LA this past week. TACC attended the event along with officials from the City of Torrance to keep abreast of economic trends in the U.S., California, and LA County. The report, which was prepared and presented by LAEDC's Chief Economist Dr. Robert Kleinhenz, highlighted that the U.S. is forecasted to experience continued economic and job growth at a moderate pace through 2017 with LA County seeing employment gains at a slower pace and continued improvement in local unemployment rates. Check out a recap of the presentation provided by the Los Angeles Business Journal.
Los Angeles County candidate filing for June primary has begun
The filing period has begun for most offices in Los Angeles County in the June primary election, including two seats on the Board of Supervisors, where incumbents are barred from seeking re-election because of term limits.
Rep. Janice Hahn, D-San Pedro, announced her candidacy for the Fourth District seat held by Don Knabe on Feb. 18, 2015, saying she could "do more for the Los Angeles region on the Board of Supervisors" than in Congress because "Washington is broken" and "increasingly mired in political gridlock and there's virtually zero cooperation between the two parties."

Candidate Filing Period has Opened for 3 Torrance City Council Seats
There are three Torrance City Council seats up for a vote in the June 7 election. Torrance City Councilman Gene Barnett's seat is open. Councilmen Geoff Rizzo and Mike Griffiths will have to run again if they want to keep their seats. The city council has six seats with staggered terms, which are two four-year terms.
Prospective candidates may get a nominating petition from the City Clerk at anytime during the filing period, which requires between 20 to 30 signatures by Torrance voters. Along with the petition, a 200-word ballot statement may also be submitted to the Clerk's Office. According to the City Clerk's office today, there were five meetings scheduled with potential nominees.
In 2014, the City of Torrance had more than 83,000 registered voters. The election will be consolidated on the Los Angeles County ballot with the Statewide Primary Election.
