Nominations open for 2018 Community & Business Awards

Opportunity knocks only once a year to honor the people and businesses that make Oxnard an outstanding community. Nominations for the 2018 Business & Community Awards are now open. The deadline is March 23, so get those nominations together now. We all know people who have contributed to the Oxnard community, so why not honor them?

OVERVIEW OF OXNARD'S RICE AVENUE / FIFTH STREET OVERPASS PROJECT

The City of Oxnard is overseeing a project to construct an overpass on Rice Avenue over Fifth Street and the UPRR tracks. The purpose of the infrastructure enhancement is to improve safety at the busy intersection and to streamline traffic and goods movement on Rice Avenue.

As we all know, the President signed the sweeping tax reform bill ushering in a broad range of changes including new rules for income tax rates and deductions, college for savings incentives, estate planning and corporate taxes. These new rules are leaving folks scratching their heads and scrambling to find out what the most sweeping tax reform package in decades means and what actions to consider.

ADVERTISING SALES FOR 2018 GUIDE

One of the Chamber’s signature publications is its annual Business and Community Guide. Advertising sales are now open for the 2018 edition.

As with past editions, the 2018 Guide will be distributed all over town. Most of the hotels in Oxnard make it available to their guests. With its eye-catching cover and beautiful photography, the Guide is something people hold onto and use as a buying reference.

5 THINGS WE DID FOR YOU IN THE PAST WEEK
1.Represented the business community on the city of Oxnard’s Measure O Oversight Committee (Measure O is the local ½ cent sales tax approved by voters in 2008).

2.Held an Oxnard Leadership Steering Committee meeting to make sure the 2018 curriculum is ready for the program participants.

3.Had an Oxnard Chamber Political Action Committee meeting to discuss the 2018 recall and to plan a candidates’ forum.

4.Met with the principles of a new business coming to Oxnard and encouraged them to look at Chamber members for goods and services they will need.

5.The top referral category searched on our website in January was “Agriculture,” followed closely behind by “Banks” and “Restaurants and Dining.”

TIMELY ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF MAJOR REGS UPHELD IN UNANIMOUS APPEAL COURT RULING
State agencies must take seriously the requirement to conduct a timely, accurate economic analysis of major regulations, according to a just-released opinion by the 5th District Court of Appeal.

In a unanimous opinion upholding the trial court, the appellate justices found that the final economic impact analysis used in rulemaking must be based on evidence, as must the responses to public comments regarding nonspeculative economic impacts which introduce new evidence into the rulemaking file.
