GOVERNOR SCOTT ANNOUNCES 18 LOW TAX OPPORTUNITY ZONE DESIGNATIONS FOR TALLAHASSEE AREA
Last week, Governor Rick Scott announced recommendations to designate 18 census tracts in the Tallahassee area as Low Tax Opportunity Zones. Low Tax Opportunity Zones, as established in the federal Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017, encourage long-term investment and job creation in targeted communities by reducing taxes for many job creators. Opportunity Zones enhance local communities' ability to attract businesses, developers and financial institutions to invest in targeted areas by allowing investors to defer capital gains taxes through investments in federally established Opportunity Funds. Earlier today, Governor Scott announced his recommendation to designate 427 communities across every Florida county as Opportunity Zones.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has 30 days to certify each state's recommendations. After the Zones are approved, the federal government will begin the rule making process to designate how Opportunity Funds are created and how businesses, developers and financial institutions can invest in qualified Zones.

OFFICE OF THE MAYOR LAUNCHES FAMILY FRIENDLY WORKPLACE SURVEY
The Office of the Mayor for the City of Tallahassee recently launched a survey in efforts to support a new program focused on celebrating and motivating local employers for their commitment to providing family friendly workplaces to the members of our community.

This effort is in conjunction with the City of Tallahassee Family First Initiative, which launched a few years ago to help the community make better investments in the success of children and families in Tallahassee/Leon County.

The City of Tallahassee is asking for your responses to help identify policies, practices, and philosophies that help to make this community a great place to work, and that helps local employers retain talented and committed employees. This survey is for business owners, senior leaders or human resource professionals who are familiar with the practices of your company or place of work.
