Prop 479 - Half-Cent Sales Tax for Transportation

Prop 479 is the continuation of an existing, dedicated half-cent sales tax in Maricopa County to fund transportation. This dedicated half-cent sales tax was first established by voters in 1985 with the approval of Proposition 300 and subsequently renewed in 2004 with the voters' approval of Proposition 400. Its extension is on the November 5, 2024, Maricopa County ballot. A "yes" vote extends the tax until 2045. A "no" vote will discontinue the tax at the end of 2025.

A 20-year continuation of the tax is projected to generate $14.9 billion in revenues (2020 dollars).

Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) Program

I was very fortunate to attend a forum where the FinCEN (a division of the U.S. Treasury Department) Director Gacki spoke about the BOI and Corporate Transparency Act. The forum was sponsored by Senator Sinema.

This affects a majority of all the businesses in the Desert Foothills Region and it seems they are still building everything out, but are mandating that all businesses provide information on who owns the business to derail fake companies that are used for money laundering.

Protect the Boarder Bill Passes the House

The Protect the Border Act (HCR 2060) passed the House this week sending the measure to the November 2024 ballot for voters to decide. The bill submits a proposition to the voters, entitled the Secure the Border Act, establishing state criminal liability for a range of border-related conduct and certain existing drug offenses involving fentanyl that cause death. It prescribes various enforcement mechanisms for these border-related provisions and grants immunity to certain state personnel who enforce these provisions as part of their official duties. Provisions are related to border crimes and enforcement and the sale of lethal fentanyl.
