Jerome Powell, who chairs the Federal Reserve, says the U.S. has a “structural labor shortage.” Baby boomers, it seems, are at its core.

“The outsize importance of the boomers is the result of the generation’s size,” wrote Ben Casselman in The Spritzler Report at https://www.spritzlerreport.com/post/baby-boomers-are-retiring-will-this-mess-up-our-workforce. “Some 76 million Americans were born between 1946 and 1964. By comparison, just 47 million people were born into the so-called silent generation that preceded the boomers, and 55 million into Generation X.”

As the boomers retire, the economic tailwind they generated for decades “is now blowing in the other direction.”
