Advice for Sports Parents

Youth sports offer our children a myriad of benefits, helping them to grow physically and mentally, but also socially, emotionally, morally and even spiritually. Dr. Amanda Zelechoski is a renowned psychologist and professor who specializes in child and adolescent mental health as well as trauma. She's also a sports parent herself. In the video above, she offers terrific advice to parents to help us realize those benefits and support our children in the best way possible.

Listen to Dr. Zelechoski's advice and consider this week how we can continue to "fill our child's bucket." Do we offer unconditional support to our young athlete, reminding him or her how much we love to watch them play? Does our focus too often shift to outcomes (wins/losses) and does this dominate our conversation after a game? As Zelechoski notes, we should also think about how we support our child's coach, recognizing the impact that individual has in developing a healthy, happy child.

Parents play a significant role in each child's youth sports experience. Make a commitment this week to be a positive example for your own child and others, creating an environment that fosters joy and promotes all the benefits sports can offer.

"No greater joy can I have than this, to hear that my children follow the truth." ~ 3 John 1:4

A Prayer for Parents

Slow me down, Lord! Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind. Steady my harried pace with a vision of the eternal reach of time. Give me, amidst the confusion of my day, the calmness of the everlasting hills. Break the tensions of my nerves with the soothing music of the singing streams that live in my memory. Help me to know the magical restoring power of sleep. Teach me the art of slowing down to look at a flower;

to chat with an old friend or make a new one; to pat a stray dog; to watch a spider build a web; to smile at a child; or to read a few lines from a good book. Remind me each day that the race is not always to the swift; that there is more to life than increasing its speed. Let me look upward into the branches of the towering oak and know that it grew slowly and well. Slow me down, Lord, and inspire me to send my roots deep into the soil of life’s enduring values, that I may grow toward the stars of my greater destiny.
