The Regional Office of Education #26 honored outstanding educators, support staff, and retirees from Fulton, Hancock, McDonough, and Schuyler counties during its inaugural celebration on June 4, 2026.

The event brought together schools, families, and community members to recognize those who make a lasting difference in the lives of students and demonstrate excellence in education.

West Prairie teacher Stephanie Kerr was named the Educator of the Year and Macomb special education paraprofessional Marilyn Keeney was honored as Support Staff of the Year.

Throughout her 30 years in education, Stephanie Kerr has inspired students and fellow educators through exceptional leadership, instructional excellence, and a passion for literacy and learning. Colleagues praised her ability to challenge students while creating a classroom environment built on encouragement, support, and high expectations. Her mentorship and dedication have strengthened the entire West Prairie school community and impacted generations of students.

The family of Marilyn Keeney accepts her posthumous recognition with ROE26 Regional Superintendent Dave Demler (far right).

Marilyn Keeney, who recently passed away, devoted nearly half a century to supporting students in Macomb schools, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, perseverance, and unwavering dedication that colleagues say will never be forgotten. Colleagues remember Keeney as one of the first people in the building each morning, often arriving early to prepare for the day with enthusiasm and positivity. Her influence extended beyond students to fellow staff members, many of whom looked to her as a mentor and inspiration.

Even though the awards recognized two exceptional individuals, the event also highlighted the profound influence all educators and support staff have on students every day. "One of the greatest strengths of our region is the incredible people who dedicate their lives to helping students grow, learn and succeed,” Regional Superintendent Dave Demler said during the awards announcement. We know that educational excellence extends far beyond test scores and classroom instruction.
