PROJECT UPDATE:

Major construction activities on Pine Street (north) are anticipated to begin as early as Monday, Monday, April 21, focusing on the segment between King Street and Main Street. Significant traffic pattern changes will be in effect, read more in the Construction Update section below. A supplemental Traffic Alert will be released prior to the start of this work. Construction activities will consist of the rehabilitation of the roadway, including new curbing, pavement, line striping, roadway signage, and stormwater improvements. New traffic signals will be installed at the Maple Street, King Street, and Main Street intersections. Improvements to pedestrian accommodations will include protected pedestrian crossing phases at the new signals, a mid-block crossing between Kilburn Street and Maple Street, new sidewalks along both sides of the roadway, and new brick paver crosswalks at Maple Street and King Street.



Work continues along Main Street between Pine Street and South Winooski Avenue as part of the Great Streets Main Street Project. Due to the proximity and overlap of the two construction projects, the two project teams are coordinating construction impacts and detour routes.

Construction Update

Unless otherwise noted, work will be restricted to the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. 

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES & TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

Pine Street (north) King Street to Main Street:

Anticipated to begin as early as Monday, April 21, and continue through the end of the month, crews will work at the intersection of King Street and Pine Street and on the segment of Pine Street between King Street and Main Street. A supplemental Traffic Alert will be issued prior to the start of this work.

Work at the intersection of King Street at Pine Street will include the removal of curb, sidewalks, and roadway surface to allow for the installation of electrical utility duct bank, traffic signal sleeves and conduit, traffic signal bases, and gravel for road base. Crews will also work along Pine Street between King Street and Main Street removing the roadway surface, sidewalks, and curb. Sidewalk and curb removal will begin on the west side of the roadway. Pine Street between King Street and Main Street will have instances of lane closures with alternating one-way traffic and shoulder/parking lane closures. In addition, the intersection of King Street at Pine Street will be closed to all traffic weekdays (Monday – Friday) during working hours (7AM – 7PM). The intersection will be reopened each night. Pine Street between Maple Street and Main Street will be closed to thru traffic. Businesses will remain open! Local traffic will be able to access businesses and residents along Pine Street north of King Street via Main Street. Thru traffic traveling northbound along Pine Street will be detoured at Maple Street for passenger vehicles and Kilburn Street for trucks. Thru traffic traveling southbound along Pine Street will be detoured at Main Street to St Paul Street to Maple Street for passenger vehicles and Kilburn Street for trucks.

Off the Roadway along the Future Champlain Parkway Alignment:

Work continues along the future Champlain Parkway alignment between Home Avenue and I-189. Topsoiling, seeding, and matting installation will continue along the future Parkway alignment. Crews will continue placing fill material and fine grading the Parkway, and setting light poles and other fixtures on the previously installed bases along the Parkway segment. Crews anticipate completing duct bank installation between Queen City Park Road and the Pine Street cul-de-sac next week and anticipate prepping the area to install granite curb along the cul-de-sac at a later date. These activities will take place off the roadway with limited impact to traffic.

Pine Street at Howard Street:

In the coming weeks, S.D. Ireland will return to the site to complete the installation of the bus shelters just south of the intersection of Pine Street at Howard Street. This work is part of the initial contract which was postponed due to manufacturing delays. These activities will be completed outside of the roadway with minimal impact on traffic. Supplemental information regarding this work will follow.

PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT:

Pine Street is permanently closed between Queen City Park Road and South Crest Drive and is an active work zone! Access for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles is restricted to local traffic only; through traffic of all kinds is strictly prohibited.

The section of the shared-use path beginning just south of the Buffalo Wild Wings on Shelburne Street (U.S. 7) and continuing to just north of the new cul-de-sac Pine Street (near the Howard Center) is open and available for use by cyclists and pedestrians. Please note, the path is not paved on the U.S. 7 end. Please use caution and watch out for varying surface conditions.

The unused section of the previously constructed Southern Connector between Shelburne Street (Route 7) and Home Avenue is an active work zone! For your safety, access for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists is strictly prohibited.

Crews will access the work zone from the western end of Home Avenue at the Champlain Parkway as well as from Shelburne Street near Buffalo Wild Wings via the ramp to the future Champlain Parkway. Travelers are encouraged to drive slowly and watch for construction vehicles and equipment entering and exiting the work zone. Additionally, travel along the ramp and unused section of the Southern Connector is restricted to construction vehicles and equipment only.

PROJECT LOCATION:

The Champlain Parkway Project spans a 2.8-mile area from the I-189 intersection with US 7 to Lakeside Avenue, and includes upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Main Street. 

The initial contract, conditionally accepted in December 2024, included the construction of the Champlain Parkway from Home Avenue to Lakeside Avenue, upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Kilburn Street.



The final contract, which broke ground in January 2025, includes the construction of the Champlain Parkway from existing I-189 near its intersection with U.S. Route 7 to Home Avenue and the section of Pine Street between Kilburn Street and Main Street.
