UPCOMING EVENT:

This Sunday, June 21, from 10 AM to 12 PM, come celebrate the approaching completion of the Champlain Parkway with the City of Burlington with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to sprint, jog, walk, stroll, or spectate on the road that has been 61 years in the making.

Join Run Vermont and the Green Mountain Athletic Association by participating in the shortest race on the longest day, the Parkway Mile. Open to all. All proceeds will be donated to the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS). Community members are also welcome to take a leisurely stroll, cheer on the racers, and participate in other family-friendly activities along the soon-to-be-open section of the Parkway, free of charge.

CHAMPLAIN PARKWAY HIGHLIGHTS:

The Burlington Department of Public Works maintains a construction map containing traffic impacts, including traffic restrictions, roadway closures, and more, for all major construction projects in the Downtown District and the South End. Plan your travel with the most up-to-date information by using the map here.

Traffic impact highlights for the Champlain Parkway Project for Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, are listed below:

• Pine Street – Main Street to Kilburn Street: Contractor presence, work predominately off the roadway. Potential for short mobile work zones with two-way traffic will be maintained.
• Route 7 – just south of Queen City Park Road to just north of the I-189 Westbound off-ramp: Throughout the week, there will be short mobile work zones along Route 7 with single-lane closures during the day and at night. Additionally, there will be intermittent short stoppages at night early next week.
• I-189 Westbound – from west of the Spear Street overpass to west of the Farrell Street overpass: Throughout the week, there will be short mobile work zones along I-189 Westbound with single-lane closures during the day and at night. Additionally, there will be intermittent short stoppages at night.
• Future Champlain Parkway – I-189 to Home Avenue: Fully closed, all traffic strictly prohibited.
• All work in the coming weeks will be weather and temperature dependent and are subject to change.
• Please note, traffic patterns have changed at the intersections of Maple Street at Pine Street and King Street at Pine Street, with the new traffic signals fully operational. Be aware, stay alert, and follow the signals. For additional information, read the Project Announcement released on 5/22.

MAIN STREET GREAT STREETS HIGHLIGHTS:

Traffic impact highlights for the Main Street – Great Streets Project for Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, are listed below:

• Roadway Markings/Line Striping:
• Main St: Battery – Willard – permanent markings
• Painting will occur with short-term full block closure throughout the day (one block and intersection at a time)
• It is anticipated that work will continue moving east throughout the week until completed
• Newly painted sections will need drying time before the road/intersection can reopen
• Work is weather dependent. Project message boards will be updated with exact dates and times as needed
• Sidewalk/Surface Work:
• Main St: The Flynn - Church St sidewalk work continues.
• Church St: Main - The Flynn loading dock sidewalk to be removed and replaced with gravel beginning as early as tomorrow, 6/19
• Pedestrian access is maintained unless otherwise noted.

Traffic impact highlights for City Paving for Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, are listed below:

• Main St: Battery to Pine 6/14/26 through 6/26:
• Curb and sidewalk work continue at the intersections of Battery and Main and S. Champlain Parkway and Main through today, 6/19.
• Pedestrian access will be provided via a gravel surface through the weekend after curb work is completed.
• Sidewalk reconstruction will follow the completion of paving as early as 6/24 and 6/25.
• Two lanes of traffic will be maintained during this work.
• Paving is scheduled to occur as early as 6/22 through 6/23.
• Lower Main reduced to westbound traffic only during paving with traffic detoured via College Street.
• Pearl St: Battery to Winooski 6/14 through 7/9:
• Nightwork continues through 7/9 and will include structure adjustments and boxcutting, paving, and line striping.
• Structure adjustments near GMT Transit Center 6/21-6/22.
• Paving will begin at the GMT Transit Center on 6/23-6/24 with shim followed by wearing course on 6/30 and 7/2.
• No work will take place July 3 and 4.
• Pavement markings will begin after July 4.

Construction Update

DURATION:

Daytime construction activities will take place between 7 AM and 7 PM, Monday morning through Friday evening, on Pine Street, Route 7, I-189 westbound, and the closed section of the Champlain Parkway. Overnight construction activities will take place between 7 PM and 6 AM, Monday night through Friday morning, on Route 7 and I-189 westbound. All work is weather and temperature dependent. 

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES & TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

All work in the coming weeks will be weather and temperature dependent and are subject to change.

Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street: Crews will perform general clean-up including topsoiling and seeding along Pine Street and intersection side streets within the project limits. This work will take place predominantly off the roadway with the potential for short mobile work zones. Two-way traffic will be maintained.

Route 7 – from just south of Queen City Park Road to just north of the I-189 Westbound Off-Ramp: Throughout the week, crews will remove the overhead sign foundations for the existing overhead sign structures along Route 7. This work will take place during the day and require short mobile work zones along Route 7 with single-lane closures. Sometime next week, the pavement marking subcontractor is scheduled to return to the site to install remaining striping and markings along Route 7. This work is dependent on weather and the subcontractor’s availability and may take place during the day or at night. This work will require single lane closures.

I-189 Westbound – from East of the Spear Street Overpass to West of the Farrell Street Overpass: Throughout the week, crews will install guardrail along I-189 westbound and work to remove the overhead sign foundations for the existing overhead sign structures during the daytime hours under single lane closures. Sometime next week, the pavement marking subcontractor is scheduled to return to the site to install the final the remaining striping and markings along I-189 westbound. This work is dependent on weather and the subcontractor’s availability and may take place during the day or at night. This work will require single lane closures.

Champlain Parkway – I-189 to Home Avenue: Along the closed portion of the Champlain Parkway, crews will perform landscaping activities during the day. The pavement marking subcontractor is scheduled to return to the site to install final striping and markings along the closed segment of the Champlain Parkway. Crews will continue working on the light poles along the Champlain Parkway. This work is dependent on weather and the subcontractor’s availability and may take place during the day or at night.

CHAMPLAIN PARKWAY REMAINS AN ACTIVE WORKZONE

The segment of the Champlain Parkway between I-189 and Home Avenue is not completed and is not open for public access. Active construction continues along this segment, which includes the movement and transport of construction vehicles, equipment, and materials. All other access (vehicular, pedestrian, or bicycle) is strictly prohibited.

PROJECT LOCATION:

The Champlain Parkway Project spans a 2.8-mile area from the I-189 intersection with US 7 to Lakeside Avenue, and includes upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Main Street. 

The initial contract, conditionally accepted in December 2024, included the construction of the Champlain Parkway from Home Avenue to Lakeside Avenue, upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Kilburn Street.



The final contract, which broke ground in January 2025, includes the construction of the Champlain Parkway from existing I-189 near its intersection with U.S. Route 7 to Home Avenue and the section of Pine Street between Kilburn Street and Main Street.
