Champlain Parkway Project
DATE: Friday, October 24, 2025
| | Crews will be installing permanent line striping and pavement markings along Pine Street, between Main Street and Kilburn Street, as weather permits. During the installation of line striping and pavement markings, on-street parking will be prohibited along Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street. The installation of the permanent line striping and pavement markings will reconfigure Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street. As part of the reconfiguration, the on-street parking along Pine Street between Maple Street and Kilburn Street will be permanently eliminated and the roadway width will be repurposed to accommodate bike lanes along either side of the roadway. | | CHAMPLAIN PARKWAY & MAIN STREET GREAT STREETS HIGHLIGHTS: | | The Burlington Department of Public Works maintains a construction map containing traffic impacts, including traffic restrictions, roadway closures, and more, for all major construction projects in the Downtown District and the South End. Pine Street (north) - Main Street to Kilburn Street:
Crews will be installing permanent line striping and pavement markings along Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street. This work is anticipated to take place throughout the week. This work is highly dependent on weather and other variables, making the schedule subject to change. Pine Street will be restricted to local traffic only, access to businesses and residences will be maintained. Traffic holds and lane closures with alternating one-way traffic or traffic shifts will be in effect. Traffic, especially traffic entering or exiting driveways on Pine Street, may be held for up to 30 minutes while the epoxy cures. Cure times are dependent on temperature. Motorists are advised to plan extra travel time. This work will cause major impacts to traffic; motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes whenever possible. A detour route will be signed utilizing Kilburn Street, St. Paul Street, and College Street.
In addition, crews will be placing topsoil, seeding, and matting along Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street towards the end of the week.
Main Street at Pine Street Intersection:
Starting mid-week, crews will be installing concrete sidewalk and continuing traffic signal work, including modifications to the junction box and signal pole foundation on the northeast corner. The intersection will remain open to traffic, but there may be intermittent lane restrictions and traffic holds in place. In addition, pedestrian detours will be in effect.
| | |
Pine Street (north) - King Street to Maple Street:
Permanent line striping and pavement marking installation will restrict this segment to local traffic only and require traffic holds at driveways along its length (additional detail above). In addition, access to this segment will be accessible via King Street only while crews work to install concrete sidewalk on the northeast corner of the Maple Street and Pine Street intersection.
| | |
Maple Street at Pine Street Intersection:
Crews will be installing concrete sidewalk on the northeast corner and on the southwest corner of Maple Street at Pine Street. Maple Street will remain open. During work on the northeast corner, Pine Street just north of Maple Street will be closed to accommodate the sidewalk work. During the work on the southwest corner, the southbound lane on the southern leg of Pine Street may be closed. The contractor intends to keep the intersection partially open. In addition, crews will be installing traffic signal infrastructure later in the week. There is the potential for intermittent lane closures.
Pine Street (north) - Maple Street to Kilburn Street:
Permanent line striping and pavement marking installation will restrict this segment to local traffic only and require traffic holds at driveways along its length (additional detail above). In addition, this segment may be restricted to northbound only mid-week while crews install the sidewalk at the southwest corner of Maple Street and Main Street.
| | |
Pine Street (south) Cul-De-Sac:
Early next week, weather permitting, crews will pave the wearing (top) course of asphalt at the Pine Street (south) cul-de-sac. This work is weather-dependent and will take place as soon as the weather allows. This will restrict access to the cul-de-sac and the adjacent properties for a day while the asphalt is installed and cools. Impacted property owners have been notified.
Off the Roadway along the Future Champlain Parkway Alignment:
Work continues along the future Champlain Parkway alignment between Home Avenue and I-189. Crews will continue placing topsoil, seeding, and mulching the center island. Crews will mill and base pave near the median barriers and on I-189 eastbound. This work may require a shift on the I-189 eastbound ramp. In addition, the granite curb will be installed along the parkway throughout the week.
The segment of the Champlain Parkway between Interstate 189 and Home Avenue is not completed and is not open for public access. Active construction continues along this segment, which includes the movement and transport of construction vehicles, equipment, and materials. All other access (vehicular, pedestrian, or bicycle) is strictly prohibited.
| | The Champlain Parkway Project spans a 2.8-mile area from the I-189 intersection with US 7 to Lakeside Avenue, and includes upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Main Street. | | |
The initial contract, conditionally accepted in December 2024, included the construction of the Champlain Parkway from Home Avenue to Lakeside Avenue, upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Kilburn Street.
The final contract, which broke ground in January 2025, includes the construction of the Champlain Parkway from existing I-189 near its intersection with U.S. Route 7 to Home Avenue and the section of Pine Street between Kilburn Street and Main Street.
