CHAMPLAIN PARKWAY & MAIN STREET GREAT STREETS HIGHLIGHTS:

Traffic impact highlights for the Champlain Parkway Project for Monday, July 14 through Friday, July 18, are listed below:

• Main Street at Pine Street Intersection: Open to vehicular traffic. Potential lane reductions next week to accommodate traffic signal work. Pedestrian detours throughout the week.
• Pine Street – Main Street to King Street: Thursday and Friday, restricted to local traffic only and accessible from Main Street only. On-street parking restrictions.
• King Street at Pine Street Intersection: Early next week, potential intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic to facilitate independent utility work. Thursday and Friday, fully closed to traffic.
• Pine Street – King Street to Maple Street: Thursday and Friday, restricted to local traffic only and accessible from Maple Street only. On-street parking restrictions starting Wednesday.
• Maple Street at Pine Street Intersection: Potential intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic to facilitate independent utility work. Thursday and Friday, local traffic only north of the intersection.
• Pine Street – Maple Street to Kilburn Street: Fully open to traffic.
• Future Champlain Parkway – I-189 to Home Avenue: Fully closed, all traffic strictly prohibited.

Traffic impact highlights for the Main Street – Great Streets Project for Monday, July 14, through Friday, July 18, are listed below:

• Main: Pine – St Paul: Sidewalk impacts. Vehicle access available. Will be local traffic only when Main/St Paul is closed.
• Main/St Paul: Partial closures throughout the week. The intersection will be open nights and weekends.
• Main: St Paul – Church: Vehicle access available. Will be local traffic only when Main/St Paul is closed.
• Main/Church: Full vehicle access available.
• Main: Church – S Winooski: Closed to vehicle traffic.
• Main/S Winooski: Closed to vehicle traffic.

Construction Update

TRAVEL NOTICE:

The segment of the Champlain Parkway between Interstate 189 and Home Avenue is not completed and is not open for public access. Active construction continues along this segment which includes the movement and transport of construction vehicles, equipment, and materials. All other access (vehicular, pedestrian, or bicycle) is strictly prohibited.

DURATION:

Unless otherwise noted, work will be restricted to the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES & TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

Pine Street (north) Main Street to Kilburn Street:

Main Street at Pine Street Intersection:

Crews will be installing concrete sidewalks at the corners of Main Street at Pine Street. Crews will work at one corner at a time to maintain pedestrian connections. Crews anticipate starting at the northeast corner before moving to the southeast corner of the intersection. This work will be completed primarily outside of the roadway but may require lane restrictions to accommodate equipment and materials. The intersection will remain open to traffic.    

Pine Street – Main Street to Maple Street:

On Wednesday, July 16, crews will be installing the remaining sidewalk along the east side of Pine Street between King Street and Maple Street. Sidewalk work is weather-dependent. This work will require temporary driveway closures while crews form and pour the concrete and allow the concrete to cure long enough to be driven over. Impacted properties will be notified directly in advance. These closures are expected to begin on Wednesday, July 16, at 7 AM and continue through Monday, July 21, at 7 PM due to curb work described below. Pedestrians will be detoured to the west of the roadway. On-street parking restrictions will be in effect during active work hours. Please pay attention to no parking signs throughout the project limits.

On Thursday, July 17, and Friday, July 18, crews will be installing curbs along both sides of Pine Street between Main Street and Maple Street. Curb work is weather-dependent. This work will require the full closure of the King Street and Pine Street intersection. Pine Street between Main Street and Maple Street will be restricted to local traffic only. Pine Street between Main Street and King Street will be accessible from Main Street to the north and Pine Street between King Street and Maple Street will be accessible from Maple Street to the south. Curb work is weather-dependent. This work will require temporary driveway closures while crews install the curb, the concrete the curb is set in cures, and the area can be backfilled. These closures are expected to begin on Thursday, July 17, at 7 AM and continue through Monday, July 21, at 7 PM. Impacted properties will be notified directly in advance. On-street parking restrictions will be in effect during active work hours. Please pay attention to no parking signs throughout the project limits.

Important information regarding parking accommodations for impact properties below!

King Street at Pine Street Intersection:

Potential for independent utility companies to be onsite, relocating aerial utilities at the intersection of King Street and Pine Street. This work will be completed under lane closures with alternating one-way traffic and parking restrictions. The intersection will be completed closed to traffic on Thursday and Friday during active construction hours to accommodate curb installation. King Street will be restricted to local access only and will be accessible from S. Champlain Street to the west and St. Paul Street to the east.  

Maple Street at Pine Street Intersection:

Potential for independent utility companies to be onsite, relocating aerial utilities at the intersection of Maple Street and Pine Street. This work will be completed under lane closures with alternating one-way traffic and parking restrictions.   

Off the Roadway along the Future Champlain Parkway Alignment:

Work continues along the future Champlain Parkway alignment between Home Avenue and I-189. Crews will continue base paving operations along the future parkway alignment in preparation for upcoming curb installation. These activities will take place off the roadway with limited impact on traffic. Please note, there will be increased construction vehicle traffic at the Parkway and Shelburne Street (Route 7) and Home Avenue. Motorists are reminded that this segment of the Champlain Parkway is NOT open to traffic of any kind.

PROJECT UPDATE:

Crews anticipate grading and paving driveway aprons along both sides of Pine Street between Main Street and Main Street starting Tuesday, July 22, through Friday, July 25. This work is dependent on weather and other variables. This work will require driveways along Pine Street to be closed for several hours between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM, one day between Tuesday, July 22, and Friday, July 25, to allow crews to grade and pave the driveway apron and provide adequate time for the asphalt to cool before accepting vehicular traffic. Impacted property owners and residents have been notified of this upcoming work and will be provided with additional notification next week as the specific driveway impacts are scheduled. 

IMPACTED PROPERTY PARKING ACCOMMODATIONS INFORMATION:

During driveway closures residents are asked to find alternative parking.



• Residents can parking along neighboring streets, but should be aware of on-street parking restrictions, especially along Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street on weekdays between 7AM and 7PM. Vehicles parked in temporary construction no-parking zones during active work hours will be towed.
• Free parking accommodations are available within the College Street City Garage starting at 7PM the day prior to any driveway closure through 7PM the day the driveway reopens.
• If you require special parking accommodations due to mobility limitations, alternative accessible parking accommodations will be made by the Contractor.

To request parking accommodations, please reach out to the Project Team with your address and the make, model, color, and license plate state and number of your vehicle. This information will be provided to Burlington Parking Services to reserve your parking. Your parking accommodation will automatically extend should driveway closures be delayed.

PROJECT LOCATION:

The Champlain Parkway Project spans a 2.8-mile area from the I-189 intersection with US 7 to Lakeside Avenue, and includes upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Main Street. 

The initial contract, conditionally accepted in December 2024, included the construction of the Champlain Parkway from Home Avenue to Lakeside Avenue, upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Kilburn Street.



The final contract, which broke ground in January 2025, includes the construction of the Champlain Parkway from existing I-189 near its intersection with U.S. Route 7 to Home Avenue and the section of Pine Street between Kilburn Street and Main Street.
