CHAMPLAIN PARKWAY & MAIN STREET GREAT STREETS HIGHLIGHTS:

The Burlington Department of Public Works maintains a construction map containing traffic impacts, including traffic restrictions, roadway closures, and more, for all major construction projects in the Downtown District and the South End. Traffic impact highlights for the Champlain Parkway Project for Monday, July 28, through Friday, August 1, are listed below:

• Main Street at Pine Street Intersection: Open to traffic. Potential lane restrictions throughout the week. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
• Pine Street – Main Street to King Street: Fully open.
• King Street at Pine Street Intersection: Open to traffic. Potential lane restrictions throughout the week. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
• Pine Street – King Street to Maple Street: Open to traffic Monday, July 28, Thursday, July 31, and Friday, August 1. Only accessible via King Street on Tuesday, July 29, and Wednesday, July 30, due to the closure of the Maple Street and Pine Street intersection.
• Maple Street at Pine Street Intersection: Fully closed to vehicular traffic on Tuesday, July 29, and Wednesday, July 30; anticipated to reopen overnight.
• Pine Street – Maple Street to Kilburn Street: Restricted to local traffic only Thursday, July 31, and Friday, August 1. West side of sidewalk closed; pedestrians detoured to east side.
• Future Champlain Parkway – I-189 to Home Avenue: Fully closed, all traffic strictly prohibited.
• Please note, all vehicular impacts are restricted to active work hours (Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 7 PM).

Traffic impact highlights for the Main Street – Great Streets Project for Monday, July 28, through Friday, August 1, are listed below:

• Main/Pine: Open to vehicular traffic. Potential lane reductions on Monday and Tuesday. Pedestrian detours throughout the week.
• Main: Pine – St Paul: Sidewalk impacts. Vehicle access available. Will be local traffic only when Main/St Paul is closed.
• Main/St Paul: Partial closures throughout the week. The intersection will be open nights and weekends.
• Main: St Paul – Church: Local traffic only with access from Saint Paul. The eastern half of the block will close Monday for roadway subbase work prior to paving
• Main/Church: Closed to vehicle traffic. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
• Main: Church – S Winooski: Closed to vehicle traffic.
• Main/S Winooski: Closed to vehicle traffic.
• King Street: Closed between S Winooski and Church beginning Monday, 7/28. Local traffic only.

Construction Update

TRAVEL NOTICE:

The segment of the Champlain Parkway between Interstate 189 and Home Avenue is not completed and is not open for public access. Active construction continues along this segment which includes the movement and transport of construction vehicles, equipment, and materials. All other access (vehicular, pedestrian, or bicycle) is strictly prohibited.

DURATION:

Unless otherwise noted, work will be restricted to the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM, Monday through Friday.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES & TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

Pine Street (north) Main Street to Kilburn Street:

Main Street at Pine Street Intersection:

Crews will be installing concrete sidewalks at the intersection of Main Street and Pine Street throughout the week. Crews will work at one corner at a time. Pedestrian access will be maintained with detours in place. Limited impacts to traffic, if any. There is the potential for lane restrictions to accommodate equipment and materials, but the intersection will remain open to traffic.

King Street at Pine Street Intersection:

Crews will be installing concrete sidewalks at the intersection of King Street and Pine Street throughout the week. Crews will work at one corner at a time. Pedestrian access will be maintained with detours in place. Limited impacts to traffic, if any. There is the potential for lane restrictions to accommodate equipment and materials, but the intersection will remain open to traffic.

Maple Street at Pine Street Intersection:

Crews will be installing subsurface drainage infrastructure at the intersection of Maple Street and Pine Street on Tuesday, July 29, and Wednesday, July 30. This work will require the intersection to be fully closed to all traffic on Tuesday and Wednesday during active construction hours (7 AM to 7 PM). The intersection is intended to reopen overnight. Should crews encounter something in the field that requires this intersection to remain closed, a supplemental Traffic Alert will be issued. Pine Street between Maple Street and Kilburn Street will be restricted to local traffic only. Motorists should seek alternative routes. Southbound vehicular traffic will be detoured at King Street to S. Champlain Street or St. Paul Street and northbound vehicular traffic will be detoured at Kilburn Street to St. Paul Street. Thru truck traffic will be detoured at College Street (southbound) and Kilburn Street (northbound) to St. Paul Street.

Pine Street – Maple Street to Kilburn Street:

On Thursday, July 31, and Friday, August 1, crews will be removing the existing sidewalk and curb along the west side of Pine Street between Maple Street and the project limits just north of Kilburn Street. The sidewalk along the west side will be temporarily closed while this work is completed, and pedestrians will be detoured to the east side. Pedestrian access to businesses and residents will be maintained. Pine Street between Maple Street and Kilburn Street will be restricted to local traffic only. Motorists should seek alternative routes. Southbound vehicular traffic will be detoured at Maple Street to S. Champlain Street or St. Paul Street and northbound vehicular traffic will be detoured at Kilburn Street to St. Paul Street. Thru truck traffic will be detoured at College Street (southbound) and Kilburn Street (northbound) to St. Paul Street. This work will require driveways to be closed for several hours on Thursday and Friday between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM to allow crews to remove sections of sidewalk and curb across driveways and restore a temporary gravel access. Impacted property owners and residents have been notified.

Important information regarding parking accommodations for impact properties below!

Off the Roadway along the Future Champlain Parkway Alignment:

Work continues along the future Champlain Parkway alignment between Home Avenue and I-189. Next week, construction activities in this area will be limited as crews focus efforts along Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street. The public is reminded that this segment of the Champlain Parkway is NOT open to public access or travel of any kind.

IMPACTED PROPERTY PARKING ACCOMMODATIONS INFORMATION:

During driveway closures residents are asked to find alternative parking.



• Residents can parking along neighboring streets, but should be aware of on-street parking restrictions, especially along Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street on weekdays between 7AM and 7PM. Vehicles parked in temporary construction no-parking zones during active work hours will be towed.
• Free parking accommodations are available within the College Street City Garage starting at 7PM the day prior to any driveway closure through 7PM the day the driveway reopens.
• If you require special parking accommodations due to mobility limitations, alternative accessible parking accommodations will be made by the Contractor.

To request parking accommodations, please reach out to the Project Team with your address and the make, model, color, and license plate state and number of your vehicle. This information will be provided to Burlington Parking Services to reserve your parking. Your parking accommodation will automatically extend should driveway closures be delayed.

PROJECT LOCATION:

The Champlain Parkway Project spans a 2.8-mile area from the I-189 intersection with US 7 to Lakeside Avenue, and includes upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Main Street. 

The initial contract, conditionally accepted in December 2024, included the construction of the Champlain Parkway from Home Avenue to Lakeside Avenue, upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Kilburn Street.



The final contract, which broke ground in January 2025, includes the construction of the Champlain Parkway from existing I-189 near its intersection with U.S. Route 7 to Home Avenue and the section of Pine Street between Kilburn Street and Main Street.
