Champlain Parkway Project

DATE: Friday, October 31, 2025

TRAVEL NOTICE:

Crews will be installing permanent line striping and pavement markings along Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street as weather permits. The installation will reconfigure Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street, permanently eliminating on-street parking along Pine Street between Maple Street and Kilburn Street and repurposing the roadway width into bike lanes along either side of the roadway.

CHAMPLAIN PARKWAY & MAIN STREET GREAT STREETS HIGHLIGHTS:

The Burlington Department of Public Works maintains a construction map containing traffic impacts, including traffic restrictions, roadway closures, and more, for all major construction projects in the Downtown District and the South End. Plan your travel with the most up-to-date information by using the map here.

Traffic impact highlights for the Champlain Parkway Project for Monday, November 3, through Friday, November 7, are listed below:

  • Main Street at Pine Street Intersection: Open to traffic. Intermittent lane restrictions and traffic holds. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
  • King and Maple Streets at Pine Street Intersections: Open to traffic. Intermittent lane restrictions and traffic holds.
  • Pine Street – Main Street to Kilburn Street: Restrictions to local traffic only. Intermittent lane closures or shifts. Traffic holds and delays.
  • Future Champlain Parkway – I-189 Eastbound: Potential for traffic shifts on the ramp for installing pavement markings and the removal of barriers.
  • Future Champlain Parkway – I-189 to Home Avenue: Fully closed, all traffic strictly prohibited.
  •  Please note that all vehicular impacts are restricted to active work hours (Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 7 PM) unless otherwise noted. Paving activities are weather-dependent and the schedule is subject to change. Traffic impacts will be significant and travels should seek alternative routes when possible.

For more detailed information on construction activities and traffic impacts related to the Champlain Parkway Project, read the Construction Update section below.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES & TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

Pine Street (north) - Main Street to Kilburn Street:

Crews will be installing permanent line striping and pavement markings along Pine Street between Main Street and Kilburn Street. This work is anticipated to take place throughout the week. This work is highly dependent on weather and other variables, making the schedule subject to change. Pine Street will be restricted to local traffic only; access to businesses and residences will be maintained. Traffic holds and lane closures with alternating one-way traffic or traffic shifts will be in effect. Drivers, especially traffic entering or exiting driveways on Pine Street, may be held for up to 30 minutes while the epoxy cures. Cure times are dependent on temperature. Motorists are advised to plan extra travel time. This work will cause major impacts to traffic; motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes whenever possible. A detour route will be signed utilizing Kilburn Street, St. Paul Street, and College Street.

Main Street at Pine Street Intersection:

Crews will continue installing concrete sidewalk and conducting traffic signal work, including modifications to the junction box and signal pole foundation on the northeast and southeast corners. The intersection will remain open to traffic, but there may be intermittent lane restrictions and traffic holds in place. In addition, pedestrian detours will be in effect.

Pine Street (north) - Main Street to Kilburn Street:

Permanent line striping and pavement marking installation will restrict this segment to local traffic only and require traffic holds at driveways along its length (additional details above). Crews will also be installing post-mounted signage on Main, King, Maple, and Pine Streets throughout the week.

Maple Street at Pine Street Intersection:

Crews will be installing traffic signal infrastructure, including signal poles and junction boxes. There is the potential for intermittent lane closures.

Pine Street (south) Cul-De-Sac:

Crews will be installing chain-link fencing outside of the roadway.

Off the Roadway along the Future Champlain Parkway Alignment:

Work continues along the future Champlain Parkway alignment between Home Avenue and I-189. Crews will continue placing topsoil, seeding, and mulching the center island, and completing other landscaping maintenance. Crews will remove barriers on I-189 Eastbound.

The segment of the Champlain Parkway between Interstate 189 and Home Avenue is not completed and is not open for public access. Active construction continues along this segment, which includes the movement and transport of construction vehicles, equipment, and materials. All other access (vehicular, pedestrian, or bicycle) is strictly prohibited.

PROJECT LOCATION:

The Champlain Parkway Project spans a 2.8-mile area from the I-189 intersection with US 7 to Lakeside Avenue, and includes upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Main Street.

The initial contract, conditionally accepted in December 2024, included the construction of the Champlain Parkway from Home Avenue to Lakeside Avenue, upgrades to Lakeside Avenue, and improvements to the section of Pine Street between Lakeside Avenue and Kilburn Street.
