Construction Update

Champlain Parkway Project

DATE: Friday, June 23, 2023

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

In observance of the Independence Day holiday (Fourth of July), crews will be offsite starting Friday, June 30, at 7:00 p.m. Construction activities will resume Wednesday, July 5, at 7:00 a.m.

The section of Home Avenue just west of Foster Street and just east of Queen City Park Road will reopen to traffic by 7:00 p.m. TODAY, Friday, June 30.

A full closure of Lakeside Avenue between Pine Street and the westerly driveway at 128 Lakeside Avenue is anticipated to begin July 10 and last up to six weeks. The closure will be in place 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. For additional information regarding the work at Lakeside Avenue, click here.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

Work will be restricted to the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Unless otherwise noted, all roadway and lane closures will reopen during the evening hours and on weekends, and access to residential and business driveways will be maintained. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists throughout the work zone. Businesses will remain open! Motorists should anticipate rough and uneven gravel driving surfaces throughout the work zone.

Throughout the week, Flynn Avenue will be reduced to a single lane with alternating one-way traffic between Briggs Street and the railroad crossing to facilitate roadway reconstruction. In addition, the City of Burlington is paving the section of Flynn Avenue starting west of the railroad crossing and continuing to Oak Beach Drive. This work is anticipated to be completed in mid-July. Inquiries on the Flynn Avenue Paving can be directed to the Department of Public Works at 802-863-9094 or dpw-pinestreetcustomerservice@burlingtonvt.gov.

Crews will continue excavating sections of Lakeside Avenue between Pine Street and the westerly driveway at 128 Lakeside Avenue to facilitate the installation of underground utilities. Lakeside Avenue will be reduced to a single lane with alternating one-way traffic between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Access to businesses will be maintained.

There is the potential for lane closures along Pine Street between Kilburn Street and Electric Avenue to facilitate the removal of abandoned railroad spurs. This work may require single-lane reductions along Pine Street with alternating one-way controlled by flaggers or a Uniformed Traffic Officer between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Business and residential access will remain open! Two lanes will be maintained along Pine Street during the peak hours of 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:

Crews will begin reconstructing Flynn Avenue between Briggs Street and the railroad crossing. Crews will excavate sections of Flynn Avenue for reconstruction under single lane closures. Motorists should expect a gravel surface along portions of Flynn Avenue throughout the week. This may require short driveway closures along Flynn Avenue. Alternative access to businesses will be provided as needed.

Crews will continue excavating along Lakeside Avenue between Pine Street and the westerly driveway of 128 Lakeside Avenue to facilitate the installation of underground utilities. This work will be completed under single-lane closures with one-way alternating traffic.

Crews will be removing the abandoned railroad spurs along Pine Street between Kilburn Street and Electric Avenue. The railroad spurs are along the west side of Pine Street between Electric Avenue and Howard Street and the east side between Electric Avenue and Kilburn Street. This work will be completed under single-lane closures with one-way alternating traffic. Crews will complete additional clean-up work at the railroad crossings at Home Avenue and Flynn Avenue.

Crews will complete additional work outside of the roadway throughout the project area. Along the Parkway alignment. Crews will continue installing topsoil, curb, and junction boxes between Home Avenue and Lakeside Avenue.

NOTICE OF TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF QUIET ZONE: Work continues on the rail road crossing improvements at Flynn and Home Avenues. A temporary suspension of the residential Quiet Zone will be in effect to facilitate the improvement work. Audible train horns will be used to provide advanced warning of oncoming trains. The residential Quiet Zone will be reestablished once the work is completed.
