Public Safety Announcement

The Segment of the Champlain Parkway between I-189 and Home Avenue is an Active Work Zone and Remains Closed to Public Access

DATE ISSUED: Thursday, July 17, 2025

PUBLIC SAFETY AND TRAVEL NOTICE:

Active construction continues along the segment of the Champlain Parkway between I-189 and Home Avenue. While the area is accessible to construction vehicles, equipment, materials, and personnel, all public access (vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle) is strictly prohibited for your safety. All access and egress points to and from this segment of the Champlain Parkway are marked with signage indicating the area is closed. In addition, temporary traffic control devices are installed to deter public access to the area outside of active work hours.

PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE CONNECTIONS:

Pedestrians and bicycles are prohibited from traveling along the Champlain Parkway between Home Avenue and I-189. Pedestrians and bicyclists should use existing shared-use path connections that run parallel to the Champlain Parkway. To access Shelburne Street (Route 7) north of the I-189 Interchange, use the shared-use path connection just south of South Crest Drive near the Howard Center and Shelburne Street near Buffalo Wild Wings, as shown in blue in the graphic below. To access Queen City Park Road or Shelburne Street (Route 7) south of the I-189 Interchange, use the shared use path connection just west of the intersection of the Parkway and Home Avenue and Queen City Park Road near the Champlain Water District, as shown in red in the graphic below.

CHAMPLAIN PARKWAY CONSTRUCTION STATUS:

Crews began working to reconstruct and rehabilitate the unused section of the Champlain Parkway between I-189 and Home Avenue in January of 2025. To date, crews have installed subsurface drainage and lighting conduit, installed lighting poles, replaced the roadway subbase, graded and fine-graded the roadway, and paved a majority of the base course or first layers of asphalt. Crews are currently working to install the sections of the concrete median barrier along portions of the Parkway and the access ramps. During the remainder of this construction season, crews will continue installing concrete median barrier, granite curbing, raised median islands, guardrail, lighting infrastructure, including wiring and lighting fixtures, landscaping, post-mounted signage, and the remaining base pavement. Additionally, independent utility work is anticipated to take place this year. The contractor anticipates installing new overhead signs and infrastructure along the Parkway over the winter. In the spring/early summer, crews will pave the final lift of asphalt and install all line striping and pavement markings.

This segment of the Champlain Parkway must open by July 30, 2026. There is the potential for this connection to be opened to traffic earlier if construction progress allows. The Champlain Parkway will not open until all necessary work has been completed to allow safe travel along the segment, including streetlighting, paving, line striping and pavement markings, median and guardrail, and roadway signage. In addition, the rehabilitation of Pine Street, including operational traffic signals at the King Street, Maple Street, and Main Street intersections, must be completed before the opening of the Champlain Parkway to accommodate the changes in traffic patterns along this corridor resulting from the Parkway.
