Traffic Alert

Champlain Parkway Project

DATE ISSUED: Wednesday, February 12, 2025

Permanent Closure of the Southern End of Pine Street Scheduled to Begin Wednesday, March 5, in Burlington, VT

Pine Street will be permanently closed between Queen City Park Road and South Crest Drive to allow for the Champlain Parkway connection between Interstate 189 and Home Avenue. The permanent closure is anticipated to go into effect starting Wednesday, March 5. Information regarding the permanent closure of Pine Street (south) will be included in each weekly Construction Update released prior to the closure. A supplemental Traffic Alert will be issued a few days prior to the closure to reconfirm the official closure date and serve as a reminder to stakeholders. Motorists should seek alternate routes!

The permanent closure of the connection of Pine Street to Queen City Park Road is necessary to accommodate the future Champlain Parkway connection between I-189 and Home Avenue. This section of the Champlain Parkway will serve as a transition area between high-speed highway (I-189) to low-speed city street (the Champlain Parkway). Constructing roadway crossings at this location was not feasible as the high-speed and high-volume travel would be unsafe and traffic operations would be challenging.

In addition, the closure of the section of Pine Street across the future Champlain Parkway during construction eliminates potential conflicts between the traveling public and construction crews and equipment at those crossings providing additional safety to the traveling public and construction crews alike.

As part of this work, a cul-de-sac will be constructed at the southern end of Pine Street just south of South Crest Drive and vegetation will be reestablished between the future Champlain Parkway and Queen City Park Road at its existing intersection with Pine Street. In addition, access to Queen City Park Road will be established from the Champlain Parkway eastbound via the eastbound off-ramp to Shelburne Street (U.S. Route 7).

Please note that, starting Monday, March 3, changes to the Number 5 (Pine Street) bus route will be implemented by Green Mountain Transit (GMT) to accommodate the permanent closure the Pine Street connection to Queen City Park Road. Green Mountain Transit will be closing six bus stops along Pine Street south of Farrell Avenue/Home Avenue and Queen City Park Road and two bus stops along St Paul Street. New stops will be implemented along Pine Street at Home Avenue and Kilburn Street and along the Champlain Parkway at Home Avenue and Flynn Avenue. In addition, bus service to the GMT Main Office will be reduced. For additional information, please see the Chittenden County Bus Map and Guide. For more information, please read GMT’s complete service alert notice here.
