CHANCE AND OPPORTUNITY
An unconventional exhibition is currently up at the Bass & Reiner Gallery, called "Pyramid Scheme." The exhibition kicked off on March 25 when the curator invited 3 artists to hang work in the gallery. Those 3 artists invited 3 artists to hang their works the following Saturday. The number of artists expanded exponentially each week so that the gallery ended up with 3,270 artist works (or, as the curator stated, the gallery collapsed under the weight of all the artwork). I visited Bass & Reiner on April 11, saw the artwork, and thought it was a very cool concept, a guerrilla action bringing random artists into a white walls gallery. At a certain point, no one could control the artists or works that were included. I very much wanted to be part of this but I couldn't imagine I would be connected to anyone who would invited me. Then last week, a colleague offered a group of us the opportunity to be her next 3 picks, first come, first served. I jumped at the chance and was selected. It turned out that this was the last group and there was no opportunity for me to invite 3 friends. This Saturday I took a small piece, a Monarch butterfly papercut encased and sewn into oiled paper, and pinned it next to the Bass & Reiner sign. Chance and opportunity played a big part here and I'm glad I seized the moment. Please go see the show if you are in the Bay Area! It is crazy cool!
