Henrietta Harris Speaks at Presbyterian Historical Society Annual Gathering
On Saturday, SCAPC member Dr. Henrietta Augustus Harris presented at the 48th Annual Gathering of the Presbyterian Historical Society of the Southwest (PHSSW) at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Henrietta’s presentation was entitled “Commemorations* of African American History in the Presbyterian Church: Highlighting Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.” The presentation covered 300 years, and one highlight was the oldest African American Presbyterian congregation in the U.S., “The First African Presbyterian Church," (note the name African), founded in 1807 in Philadelphia by Rev. John Gloucester.
Henrietta holds membership in the PHSSW, The Presbyterian Historical Society, The Louisiana Historical Society, and now The Texas State Historical Association. Her remarks concluded: "The history of African Americans in the Presbyterian Church is a story of resilience, intellectual leadership, and a long struggle to dismantle white supremacy within an ecclesiastical body that was, for much of the 19th century, complicit in slavery. Additionally, the history of African Americans in the Presbyterian Church is a long complex journey marked by early pioneering, deep segregation, courageous activism, and eventually, a push for structural inclusion within the Reformed Theology."
*This title came from, “A Century of Black History Commemorations”, the 2026 Black History Theme from the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, founded by Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson and others in 1925.
