Change -- It's Natural!

* * *

We live under the collective illusion that if we work hard enough or make enough money, or have just one stroke of luck we'll be able to make it to a plateau where we can relax for a while, breathe a long exhale, sit back, and experience the feeling of finally making it.  Well, that's not how it works in real life.

In every day situations we are constantly being challenged to change our perspectives or patterns of behavior and adapt to the situation or challenge at hand. We all know that change is the only constant in the universe.  Heraclitus, another one of those old, wise Greeks from days of yore, said that you never step twice in the same river.

To continue the river analogy, Dr. Marcel learned from his kayaking days that if he had to bail out of his kayak in the middle of a rock-filled rapids, he floated through the turbulence feet first with the knees flexed and legs like springs so he could carom off the rocks.  A stiff body in the rapids is a body that is more apt to shatter and break.  Adaptation is a survival skill.

We have observed that as humans age, some of us reach a certain level where we almost literally nail our shoes to the floor and refuse to move on.  This is when we truly begin to die -- physically, spiritually and emotionally.

We have also observed that change can be enervating and dynamic, and when we consciously align with it, our path through life is joyous and fulfilling.

The end of the year is when we naturally tend to think about change.  After all, an old cycle is ending and a new one is beginning.  So it is natural that our writers address the challenges of adaptation to changes.

In this newsletter, Dr. Connie writes of conscious alignment with change and how centering in Spirit eases transitions. Dr. Marcel discusses alternatives to New Year's resolutions.  Jane Hernandez, CCHT, offers practical approaches that help reframe the challenges of change into opportunities, and Nicole Noceto entreats us to attune with the flow of change.  Dr. Corrine is on vacation for a month in Taiwan and Burma (lucky her!) and will return as a regular columnist in January.

Speaking of how conscious alignment with Spirit greases the skids in adapting to change, this is a perfect opportunity to again mention one of the most important movies we've ever seen.  "Finding Happiness" uplifts and changes lives.  It is virtually impossible to not be deeply touched by the movie.  It is the perfect Christmas stocking stuffer for a loved one of any age and is available in our office for $20.  If you purchase the movie from Pacific Naturopathic and are not moved by its truth and sincerity, just return it and we'll give you a full refund.  What a deal!

Have a joy-filled, healthy, conscious holiday season.

Conscious Change

* * *

We tend to be creatures of habit.  We take the same route to work, stop by the same coffee shop, park in our favorite parking space, follow a tried and true routine. While familiar routines don't necessarily breed contempt, they do encourage us to leave our consciousness behind. Most of us have had the experience of finding ourselves at a habitual destination with no memory of the journey. If for no other reason than avoiding that lapse in consciousness, changing it up would be a wise move.

Dietarily, consuming the same foods on a daily basis increases the probability both of developing food sensitivities and of developing deficiencies.  Physically, repeating the same movements over and over causes problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, muscle strains and  uneven muscle development.  Repetition of the same thoughts creates limiting mental grooves.

If, by following familiar pathways and resisting change, we hope to be secure, our efforts are doomed to failure.

Change is relentless in physical reality. The earth spins on its axis. The weather is ever unpredictable. Trees bud, flower, fruit, then drop their leaves and rest. Bodies age. Friends come and go. Children marry. Parents die. Civilizations ascend and descend. Economies soar and crash.

Earthly circumstance can only ever provide a temporary and false sense of security.  It is only by orienting to the Infinite and to the changeless Self within that we find a secure center, unthreatened by the uncertainty surrounding us.

That being said, why not welcome and even court change in our outer lives?Why not cultivate new tastes, explore alternative realities, develop healthier routines? That may be easier said than done, as much of our behavior is culturally conditioned: reaction, rather than response; unconscious.  Thus, we recommend affirmations and resolutions; mindfulness meditation; Emotional Freedom Technique and hypnotherapy (see Jane Hernandez's article). See Dr. Marcel's article for other tips.

Here's to each one of you aligning yourself with eternal truths and finding ways of creating conscious and healthy change in your life in the coming year.

The Same Old Post Holiday Blues

 * * *

                  Marcel Hernandez, N.D.

Every year it's the same thing. It starts at Thanksgiving and continues on through New Year's.  Eventually, January 2 plods into being and gone are the obligatory seasonal smiles and greetings, marathons in the kitchen, various forms and copious amounts of alcohol, sugar cookies, impossibly rich food, what seems like 500 football games, and Christmas present angst.  Back in the forefront of consciousness are the drumbeats of various wars, the fear of downsizing, the Obamacare conundrum, credit card bills and dealing with a body (your own) that is complaining about the holiday excesses.  The overall result is fodder for a bad country and western song - "the same old post-holiday blues."  What to do....?

No, I'm not going to suggest another rendition of the usual spate of New Year's resolutions, like losing weight, eating more healthily, going to the gym more often or spending more time with family. For a variety of reasons, New Year's resolutions have a way of fading into rationalization and denial.  Springtime garage sales are the best places to buy almost new, hardly used home exercise equipment.  Instead of resolutions, consider the following more permanent approaches to transforming your experience of life:

Learn another language. Studying another language activates different parts of your brain and may spur new channels of behavior and change.

Change careers. If your job is ho-hum and your calendar is predictably the same year after year, think about a time when you were happiest? Follow your passion - follow your bliss.  Every change starts with a defining moment.  What does it take for you to take a leap and trust that you will land on your feet?

Volunteer. Want to experience a deep sense of joy?  Doing service is amazingly rewarding and uplifting.  Volunteering in circumstances where you are needed can make the other things in life seem more bearable. There are service opportunities and calls for volunteers from churches, homeless shelters, schools, Boys and Girls Clubs - an endless list of opportunities.

Plant a tree. A piece in The Wall Street Journal recently said tree planting is on the decline. Just Google "tree planting charities" and you'll get a list of organizations that need assistance in tree planting.

Rescue an Animal.  Visit your local animal shelter and ask if they need assistance. If you are able, adopt a pet and add some new life to your home. The sweetest, most loving animals I have ever seen come from shelters.

Declutter.  Look around your home. Have you stuffed it with possessions from numerous shopping trips?  Are the walls closing in on you? A cluttered home can dissipate your energy and contribute to a feeling of being overwhelmed. Pick out a few items each day and ask yourself - do I need this...does it serve a purpose...would I really miss it if it were gone...can it be useful to someone else?

Perform Acts of Kindness and Gratitude.  Make kindness your mantra.  Little things often leave great impressions: Smile at cashiers in grocery stores and shops. Think kind thoughts about everyone, even if they are having a bad day. Thank others frequently, even for small things (there are no small things). Let another driver into the line of traffic. Run an errand for someone who is sick.

Take Up a New Hobby.  So you've always wanted to take guitar lessons, or painting, Mediterranean cooking or karate -- whatever it is you've always wanted to do, just go for it. You may open up opportunities in your life that were unavailable to you while living out your old patterns. Remember that there's no obligation to continue doing whatever you choose. The lesson, and the fun, is in trying.

Make Healthy Lifestyle Changes.  I couldn't resist inserting a few healthy resolution possibilities.  It's hard to feel good on a bad diet and a flabby body. The choices you make for your body have a direct impact on how you feel physically and emotionally. If you're feeling blue, perhaps you can turn things around by dumping those holiday eating indulgences and developing eating patterns that work for you.  And you don't have to go to the gym to exercise.  Frequent brisk walks, especially in natural and lovely environments, can help transform your experience of life.

It is important to note that even a small change can generate great changes on a number of levels.  Once the door to transformation is open, an opportunity is created in the universe for good things to enter your life.  Go for it and the same old post holiday blues will dissipate rapidly.

Intravenous Nutritional Protocols

at Pacific Naturopathic

 * * *

Many disease states compromise the human gut's ability to adequately absorb nutrients like amino acids,
minerals, and vitamins.

* Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, ALS, and Multiple Sclerosis have been shown to greatly benefit from IV antioxidant protocols that help heal the inflammation in the brain often found with these diseases.

* Chronic fatigue states such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Brain Fog have mitochondrial energy deficits shown to be helped when specific natural supplements are given intravenously.

* Many immune system and detoxification functions can be improved with IV protocols.

* A number of cancers are very responsive to IV nutritional therapies which can be used to help treat cancer as well as to improve tolerance of conventional cancer treatments.

* Some treatments involve 1-3 hour drips and others are 30 minute treatments, depending on the nutrient mix and concentration being infused.

To name a few:

            IV Glutathione

            IV Alpha Lipoic Acid

            IV Vit C

            Amino Acid infusions

            Vitamin and Mineral drips

            Myers' Cocktail

Other Protocols for Energy and Immune System Function

We have a dedicated Infusion room that is relaxing and peaceful for all these therapies.

Dr. Marcel Hernandez has been trained in IV therapeutic protocols and will be offering treatments for those patients for whom treatments are appropriate and safe.

Adapting to Change

* * *

"Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like."                                                                               -- Lao Tzu

Connie Hernandez, N.D.

Shanti Rubenstone, MD

As children, we move from moment to moment, celebrating the added inches, and oblivious to the inevitable deterioration that aging brings. There comes the day, though, when we look in the mirror, and find a disconnect between who it is that we think we are and who it is we see looking back at us.

One common solution is to opt for cosmetic changes: botox, face lifts, tummy tucks... anything really to erase the ravages of time and avoid looking aged or worn.  While people are often embarrassed or apologetic about the choices they make to preserve or enhance their image of themselves, each of us should do what we feel we need to do.   After all, we make lesser cosmetic choices on a daily basis... hair dye, hair removal, manicures and more.

I find myself thinking of the story of the Velveteen Rabbit, both worn and made more real by the loving of children and the passage of time. And I wonder also why physical appearance has come to trump experience and wisdom as a barometer of age related change.

All that not withstanding, there's much that we can do to age gracefully, both physically and mentally.  The healthier we are, the better we age. More than anything else, lifestyle can protect us from changes brought by degenerative disease. The guidelines are the simple ones that we've heard time and again. Eat fresh natural foods. Avoid excessive food and drink. Stay active. Stay connected. Laugh often. Live a life of service. Open your heart.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples."             -- Mother Teresa
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beyond those simple guidelines of lifestyle medicine, wellness medicine can help you optimize your nutritional status, balance your hormones, preserve your brain function, support your musculoskeletal system, heal your skin, prevent many age related complaints. If I were to name the nutrients most generically useful to maintaining physical and mental function in aging, they would be omega 3 fatty acids, B12 and folic acid. And still, as gracefully and healthfully as you age, you will age. Each of us must come to terms with that certainty. Resistance, as we know, is futile.

The challenge is expressed in the words of Reinhold Niebuhr's serenity prayer.  "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference".  Counseling, emotional freedom technique and other techniques of repatterning can help. But ultimately, it is our centering in spirit that saves us. When we identify with the unchanging reality of spirit, we begin to see the changes that come to our physical bodies as changes in costuming, rather than changes in who it is that we truly are. And we begin to accept and rest easier with those changes.

Enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season!

  Change Might Seem Like Just a Word But...
It's About the Rest of Your Life

Jane Hernandez, CCHT

Jane 2013

The online dictionary defines change as: to undergo transformation, transition, or substitution <winter changed to spring>

Yes, change can be frightening to us because we tend to cling to what is a known quantity until it becomes unbearable. Yet the dictionary defines change as something that is part of a full life...transformation, transition, substitution...what's not to like? Is change desirable? When you think about it, it's the stuff of dreams. It's what we call plans, goals, wishes. We know we must grow and change but because the future is such an unknown we often stay with the devil we know. But what of the angel who is waiting for us? Do we have a choice? Oh yeah.

All of us have some internal programming that is holding us back. We have a knowing about this but changing and breaking through is often a mystery. The good news is that there are ways to get to the core of ourselves without losing our sense of safety.

For example, someone might be very depressed and in despair about their life being hopeless and pointless. In a situation like that change is what is most needed and desired. The path to this change is through hypnosis -a state of focused attention where your subconscious is open and willing to take in new information and dispose of old information that is holding you back. You are guided by a hypnotherapist and slip deeper into that focused state -- your subconscious, all the while totally aware and present to what is happening. It is then that a suggestion, a thought that will help you solve a problem, is introduced by the hypnotherapist. Your subconscious can be directed by carefully insuring that your thoughts are consistent with what you want in your life.  You are, in effect, reprogramming your mind to create success in any aspect of your life. Now, that's change that is hard to resist.

Be the Change!

* * *

Nicole Noceto

I recently came across a quote, the author of whom is unknown, but it really resonated with me.  It goes as follows:
"Whatever you hold in your mind will tend to occur in your life.  If you continue to believe as you have always believed, you will continue to act as you have always acted.  If you continue to act as you have always acted, you will continue to get what you have always gotten.  If you want different results in your life or your work, all you have to do is change your mind."

How one reacts to change is a conscious choice.  The truth is, change is constant, yet so many of us resist it.  Being confronted with considering the 'unknown' often brings about feelings of fear and anxiety, which is only natural.  Developing tools to help effectively deal with these feelings will improve one's ability to face change.  This begins with the conscious choice to be open to experiencing something different.

If there is anything that I have learned from facing change, it's that growth is an automatic response and thus, resisting change leads to limitation.  If change means adapting to new circumstances or cultivating internal transformation, then we must realize change as the catalyst behind personal growth - the ultimate healing mechanism!

Being properly equipped to work through the stress and emotions associated with change is a large piece of the puzzle. Techniques, of course, will vary person to person, but I firmly believe in practices that will promote mindfulness and creativity.

For example, body movement and breathwork promote awareness of the present moment, alleviating anxiety of the future and perceived difficulties.  Developing creative outlets like playing music, or writing; doing hands-on projects; being outdoors are all incredibly effective stress-reducers, contributing to improved mental and physical health.

Explore the many options available to you, and communicate with all different types of people.  Be the one to instigate small changes in your life.  You will better prepare yourself for facing unexpected change, while improving your conscious experience and quality of life.

Breast  Thermograph
at Pacific Naturopathic
***
Measuring the temperature of the breasts

Normal thermog photo
Thermography is noninvasive and offers therapeutically useful information

Change does not come easily to medicine. The idea of birth assistants washing their hands between births was originally deemed little better than superstition. Today's conventional medicine promotes annual mammograms and shuns breast thermograms.

There are many reasons for this, one being economic (mammography equipment costs big bucks and must be paid for).  Another is simply that annual mammograms are considered standard of care. Physicians have been taught to believe that the best we can do for women is to use mammograms to discover breast cancer earlier, rather than later.  Another reason is that the wrong question is being asked about thermography.

The question being asked is whether breast thermography can accurately diagnose breast cancer. The answer, of course, is no. Neither can mammography. (The only definitive diagnosis for breast cancer is via breast biopsy.) Better questioning would be to ask whether breast thermography can detect change, positive or negative, in breast tissue.  Or whether breast thermography adds a different kind of information in a safer way than mammography. The answer to both questions is yes.

When we find negative changes in breast tissue through thermography, we are able to address those changes, potentially reversing them before they result in breast cancer.  Mammograms can not offer the same type of information. In addition, thermograms, unlike mammograms, are harmless and can help patients decide when opting for a mammogram as well would be a wise choice.

The cost to you of breast thermography is $225.

In our ongoing efforts to serve our patients with the latest, most effective natural health approaches, we are delighted to share our excitement about or latest offerings with our readers...

Intravenous Nutritional Therapy

iv photoThis is a major addition not only to our services, but to our ability to secure dramatic, positive results with safe, effective therapies.

Here's how it works. We will need to see a comprehensive blood test not older than three months. If you have a recent blood test, you will need to have one more lab test, a G6PD, to rule out a genetic condition that is a contraindication for IV therapy.  If you do not have a recent comprehensive blood test, we can order it for you.

Next, you will need a short office visit before onset of treatments to determine if I.V. therapy is safe and appropriate for your needs.  Your unique personal protocol will be discussed with Pacific Naturopathic doctors and you can start IV therapy the same day as the office visit.

We offer a comfortable, quiet, peaceful atmosphere where you may read, work on your computer, listen to music or watch movies (with earphones), or just sit back and relax or nap. There is minimal discomfort.  You will be able to drive yourself to and from the appointment without any difficulty.

At first, we will only be able to accommodate a maximum of four people a day for treatments.  If you feel you may be helped with I.V. therapy, or would like to just explore the possibilities please phone to reserve your space soon.

Click here for detailed information about IV nutritional therapy offered at Pacific Naturopathic.

Boston Heart Diagnostics has offered Pacific Naturopathic doctors an amazing deal on their Cardiac Risk Assessment blood test, at no out-of pocket cost to you!

Yes, what you read is true.  Standard blood lipid panels (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL) are not predictive of cardiovascular disease. The test we are offering includes proprietary advanced risk tests, and a comprehensive offering of lipid, lipoprotein, apolipoprotein, cardiometabolic, liver, kidney and genetic tests -- four pages of test results, plus a 54-page narrative discussing your results. And best of all, except for a $35 administrative fee,  there is no cost to you! How is this possible? What's the catch?  Click here to read about this extraordinary test.

Note:  You must be an established patient at Pacific Naturopathic and have health insurance for this special program. You must also have a diagnosable condition, like high cholesterol, cardiac abnormalities or a strong family history of heart disease for us to be able to order this test. Other low-cost options are available for those who do not have insurance. Unfortunately, we are unable to order this test for Medicare patients. The government does not yet allow naturopathic doctors to bill Medicare. A 60-minute return office call is required to discuss your results. The cost of the return office call is $180.

We are delighted to have found a far infrared sauna at a price most of us can afford.

Dr. Connie enjoys the sauna between patients

We have long owned two far infrared saunas -- one at our home here in the Bay Area and one at our Hawaii retreat.  They are both big, bulky wooden structures that dominate the space they are in.

We have reached an arrangement with the manufacturer to distribute a high tech, state of the art portable far infrared sauna for a very reasonable price -- just $995 plus tax.  Shipping is free!

Like to try one before you invest? Easy...we have one in our office specifically for you to try out at no cost.  Just give a call, 917-1121, to make sure the room is free.

There are many reasons why a sauna is one of the best investments you can make for your health.  Click here to read about why we think this is a deal just too good to pass up.

 At Pacific Naturopathic, we offer evidence-based, integrated approaches to most acute and chronic health concerns. Bone health, breast health, men's health and prostate care, hormonal balance for both women and men, elimination of all types of bodily pain -- both mechanical and metabolic -- acute and chronic, autoimmunity, cancer, cardiovascular health, inflammation, digestion, pediatrics, and metabolic cleansing are particular areas of interest to our practitioners. To encourage patient participation, we offer both guided self-help protocols and comprehensive doctor assisted protocols.  Our patients tell us they particularly appreciate our doctors, practitioners, and staff for our caring attitudes and commitment to service.
