Change and Transformation

Over the last several months, thoughts of organizational change and transformation have been on my mind, as they likely have been for many of you. We often espouse a desire for change without seriously considering what it would mean to each of us individually and collectively. After the last several years, some may also wish things would just settle as fatigue and anxiety still linger. Leaders typically understand that effective organizational change relies on shared values, even while an honest assessment of those values beyond the rhetoric may be lacking, or at least the extent to which values are shared may vary on the context and one’s positionality.

Our new president talks about finding a “true north” to help us cultivate the best educational and workplace cultures and provide bold service to our publics through a culture of collaboration that is people-focused, at least in part. The good news is that MSU has so many individuals collectively committed to these goals, even though our responsibilities may lead us to pursue them in different ways.

2023-2024 All-University Awards

The Office of Faculty and Academic Staff Development is very pleased to announce the 2023-2024 All-University Award recipients! The honorees of these various awards epitomize a sampling of the excellent work done by MSU faculty, academic specialists and staff, graduate assistants, and executive leaders. Please join us in congratulating these highly deserving recipients!

These internal awards represent an important piece of recognizing the outstanding work done at MSU. Each award selection committee is tasked with reviewing each dossier and contributing to a discussion of nominees. Participating in the recommendation of these award recipients necessitates a lot of time and care from these committees, and we are so grateful for their willingness to serve!

We invite you to join us in celebrating these awards at the annual All-University Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 1, 3:30-5:50 pm at the Kellogg Center.

A Culture that Values Teaching

What does it mean to value teaching? Whose views matter in assessing teaching? What is the role of student learning in quality teaching? In what ways do contextual features such as required versus elective, time of day and modality matter in whether instruction is perceived as effective? What evidence of teaching should be used to make these assessments? What support is in place to improve teaching for instructors who want and need it? There are many questions being asked at MSU and nationally* about what it means to value teaching and take it seriously in annual reviews and promotion decisions. And since beginning the transition from SIRS to the Student Perceptions of Learning Survey (SPLS), numerous groups and individuals have been wrestling with understanding past practices and finding answers to how we can collectively move forward creating a culture that values teaching, which ties directly to student success.
