Pro Bono Update

There's transformation afoot!

Last month, key stakeholders from throughout our firm and the private bar gathered at our Raleigh headquarters for a two-day working session to plan for the transformation of pro bono at our firm.

The event capped off the six-month assessment of our pro bono program funded by a grant from the Legal Services Corporation's Pro Bono Innovation Fund. The assessment was conducted by thredpartners, a consulting firm with deep roots in public-interest law.

"Our sincerest thanks to everyone who joined us for the working session or has participated in the assessment in other ways," said Allison Constance, our Director of Pro Bono Programs.

"The insight we have gained — and hope to continue gaining — from our partners is invaluable. We are incredibly grateful for their contributions," Allison said.

The assessment is the first phase of a years-long transformation process aimed at making pro bono even more impactful for our clients and even more accessible and rewarding for our volunteers.

To continue this effort with the support of the Legal Services Corporation, our Pro Bono Programs team is applying for a two-year Transformation Grant from the Pro Bono Innovation Fund. We expect LSC to announce this year's PBIF grant awards in the summer.

Pro bono for nonprofits

Did you know that some of our clients are nonprofit organizations? It's true! While most of our clients are individuals, we can provide free legal help to nonprofits that further our mission. Read the Volunteer Spotlight below to learn how Raleigh attorney Kristin Mitcham helped a Clay County nonprofit provide temporary housing to Hurricane Helene survivors.

Volunteer Spotlight

Kristin D. Mitcham · Ward & Smith

Raleigh

Kristin Mitcham, a real-estate attorney in the Raleigh office of Ward and Smith, P.A., recently put her skills to use on behalf of a Clay County nonprofit seeking to provide temporary housing for Hurricane Helene survivors.

A few weeks after the storm, the head of the nonprofit contacted Joseph Chilton, supervising attorney in our Smoky Mountain Offices, for help. The organization wanted to provide temporary housing for survivors, but it needed its space for another purpose by a certain date. The group wanted help creating occupancy agreements that wouldn't inadvertently turn them into long-term landlords.

Since our staff primarily represent tenants, Joseph reached out to our Pro Bono Programs team to see if a pro bono volunteer could help. Kristin jumped at the opportunity, drafting agreements to establish a clear and limited relationship between the organization and storm survivors.

"The clients expressed a deep appreciation and satisfaction for all that Kristin did for them," said Allison Constance, our Director of Pro Bono Programs, "and we are equally appreciative of her service. Thank you, Kristin!"
