Verified through functional MRI ~ new research is showing immediate changes in the brain after Chiropractic adjustments.
|
|
Hello!
Have you 'fallen' off your self care schedule this FALL? Have your pain and stress increased as a result? It has been well established that chiropractic renders positive outcomes for mechanical pain (see pain studies below). We are here to support your
self- care needs.
Did you also know that decreasing your pain through Chiropractic care can also improve your emotional state? If you struggle with chronic pain it’ll be no surprise to you that pain affects your sensations, emotions and thinking.
We see this all the time at InnerMovement. For example, someone who is tired and grumpy on their first visit will return on their follow up visits reporting that they find they are happier and lighter.
So what’s happening? Research clearly shows that if you suffer with chronic pain you often have abnormal brain function leading to altered states.
As part of a mechanistic verses holistic medical approach, the common western medical practice model tends to put pain and stress into two separate categories. However, research using a functional MRI (type of MRI that requires patients remain still while thinking about performing specific tasks causing blood flow to the area or region in use during the task) found pain and stress are linked in the same area of the brain.
According to Yang et al.'s functional MRI (fMRI) research (2020); chiropractic adjustments help both! Their study concluded immediate changes in the areas of the brain involving pain, emotional, and cognitive centers were achieved after chiropractic adjustments.
The study also found that adding complementary therapy such as massage rendered even better functional improvement. Yang et al.'s study reaffirms our holistic approach at InnerMovement of combining chiropractic care and massage. After nearly 20 years of using this multidisciplinary approach, we have certainly witnessed improved mood and decreased pain with our patients at InnerMovement on a daily basis.
It was also found that the more significant the pain initially, the more frequent chiropractic care per week rendered better outcomes. Six (6) chiropractic visits over a few weeks time reduced pain the most (Yang et al., 2022). Again, this type of visit frequency is what we have been teaching our acute and chronic pain patients from day one at InnerMovement.
Although it feels good to see yet another research study validate our holistic approach and patients' experience over the past 20 years; it feels even BETTER to help patients get out of pain and living happier lives! We can't wait to see you on the schedule for your next adjustment and fall in a-lign-ment! :)

Chiropractic & The Brain
Outcomes verified by fMRI
|
When you get Chiropractic Treatment for chronic low back pain, Functional MRI scans show that it immediately starts to help areas of your brain involved in feeling pain and emotional stress. (1)
So Chiropractic care can help both your pain and your brain!
One of the brain areas affected is the part of the brain, called the precuneus, that helps support your emotional and thought processes.
The more severe your chronic low back pain the worse this area performs. Chiropractic treatment for chronic low back pain helps restore normal function in the precuneus, Normalization of the left precuneus after chiropractic treatment was associated with better emotional experience and less need to avoid activity.
Not surprisingly chiropractic patients also have better function in the area of the brain called the pain matrix which is involved in pain perception.
A course of 6 treatment continues to further benefit the same brain areas. While after the first visit there is some decrease in the overactivity of the emotional areas it took 6 visits to normalise. The improvements in brain areas during Chiropractic care, related to emotional experience, increase in proportion to overall reduction in pain.

Chiropractic & Pain
3 studies showing positive outcomes
Research Study #1:
In this 2005 study it was reported that 87% of chiropractic patients reported improvement in musculoskeletal pain.

Even better pain results were reported in this 2014 study, showing 95% of chronic pain patients reported improvement with Chiropractic care.

Outcomes of acute and chronic patients with magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed symptomatic lumbar disc herniations receiving high-velocity, low-amplitude, spinal manipulative therapy: A prospective observational cohort study with one year follow up. Journal (3), 155-163

Research Study #3:
This 2018 study reported great improvements in sacroiliac joint pain in 95% of patients receiving Chiropractic Spinal adjustments. SI joint pain is a primary generator of Low-back pain in pregnancy and is one of the most common prenatal conditions we treat at InnerMovement.

Chiropractic
445K times safer than surgery
|
Also, according to Shokri, et al. (2018), “compared to common treatments for lumbar disc herniation, chiropractic care is 37,000 to 148,000 times safer than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and 55,000 to 444,000 times safer than surgery.”
Whedon, Mackenzie, Phillips and Lurie (2015) reported on the safety in general of chiropractic patients and based their study on 6,669,603 subjects after the unqualified subjects had been removed from the study, with the total patient number accounting for 24,068,808 office visits. They concluded, “No mechanism by which SM [spinal manipulation] induces injury into normal healthy tissues has been identified” (Whedon, et al., 2015, p. 5).
This study supersedes all the rhetoric about chiropractic and stroke and renders an outcome assessment to help guide the triage pattern of mechanical spine patients.

Chiropractic
the 'only' first choice for spine pain
|
Chiropractic is safe, creates a mechanical solution for biomechanical pathology, and renders better outcomes when used as clinically indicated.
Should the medical community and insurers read the evidence in the literature, chiropractic isn’t the best “first choice” for mechanical spine pain, it should be the only first choice. It is studies like this and others that will help “bridge the knowledge gap” to bring chiropractic to the forefront as a Primary Spine Care Provider for chronic pain and functional brain improvement.
