Scouting Families:

As you may have heard, the BSA national council has made some changes to how your annual Scouting membership will be renewed. The purpose of this message to alert you as what to look out for and what actions you may need to take. However, please consult your unit leader, as there are some "custom" options that your unit may be considering that could change how this news impacts you.

Please be aware that the timing of the renewal process may be different for members of the same unit. Individuals who joined Scouting during the fall of 2023 will begin receiving renewal messages soon. Individuals who have been members of Scouting for a longer period of time will start to receive renewal messages during the late fall. This is explained in more detail below.

Best wishes for a great summer of Scouting adventures,

Mary Hanson-Fatzinger

Scouting Membership Renewal Update

What has changed?

Annual membership renewal for individual youth and adult members in Scouting is now a separate process from the annual unit renewal of your unit (pack, troop, crew, or ship). Both processes used to be part of an annual charter renewal process (also known as "recharter").

When will my membership expire?

All memberships are now for 12 months. Youth or adult members who joined:

  • prior to August 1, 2023 have memberships that expire each year on December 31.
  • on or after August 1, 2023 have memberships that expire on the last day of the month prior to when they joined. (Example: For a member who joined on August 10, their membership will expire each year on July 31.)

What will I receive?

Two months before your membership expires, you will receive an email from the BSA national office reminding you to renew your membership. There will also be alerts displayed if you log in to myScouting at https://my.scouting.org/ or Scoutbook Plus at https://advancements.scouting.org/

What do I need to do to prepare?

Confirm or update your email address in your Profile in either myScouting at https://my.scouting.org/ or Scoutbook Plus at https://advancements.scouting.org/

so that you receive the renewal notification. Remember to save any changes by clicking/tapping on the "Save Changes" button when you are finished.

Can my unit handle this for me?

Contact your unit leadership. The default process is now for individual members to renew and pay their national BSA, local council, and optional Scout Life subscription fees, but some units may choose the option to pay on behalf of all of their members.

Renew your membership (if your unit is not doing so) when you receive an email notification. You will be charged for the national Scouting membership, local council service fees, and optional Scout Life subscription -- but not any unit dues. Your membership expiration date will be extended by one year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are unit dues also collected with the online membership renewal?

No. Your unit will collect any unit-specific fees or dues at a time and method specified by your unit.

What if I am registered in multiple positions?

If you are registered in multiple positions, such as in multiple Scouting units or in a unit and district/council position, the membership expiration date is now the same for all of your positions. Only your primary position is paid -- the rest are considered "multiple" registrations with no additional fees for national or the local council.

What happens if I don't renew my membership before it expires?

Your membership will expire and you will be dropped from your unit's roster after a lapsed period. You will not be eligible to participate in any Scouting activities or earn any advancements.
