The National Academy of Sciences (NAS), on behalf of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development, is currently accepting applications for the 2020 class of Jefferson Science Fellows (JSF).

The JSF program at the Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) was established by Secretary Powell in 2003 and serves as an innovative model for engaging the American academic science, engineering, and medical communities in U.S. foreign policy and international development. Since inception, approximately 150 Fellows have served at State or USAID, and we are anticipating an opportunity for 15 new Fellows to be selected for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The JSF program is open to tenured, or similarly ranked, faculty from U.S. institution of higher learning who are U.S. Citizens. The application period will open in early August and will close at the the end of October. Selected Jefferson Science Fellows spend one year on assignment at the U.S. Department of State or USAID as science advisers on foreign policy/international development issues . Assignments are tailored to the needs of the hosting office, while taking into account the Fellows' interests and areas of expertise. Following the fellowship year, Fellows will return to their academic career but remain available to the U.S. government as an experienced consultant for short-term projects.
