Changes to Lawyer Portal Navigation

Starting today, Feb. 1, 2024, lawyers may notice a change to the Lawyer Portal’s navigation to a new, mobile-friendly menu system. The Law Society has moved the left-hand menu items to the top right-hand side of the Portal, above the Law Society logo.  

While this changes how lawyers may navigate to pages within the Portal, all of the Portal’s functionality is the same and the links to individual pages within the Portal are identical. This change allows lawyers to use the Lawyer Portal on mobile devices, tablets and other devices with smaller screens.

Honouring Black History Month

Every February, people in Canada are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians and their communities. The role of Black Canadians in Alberta’s social and legal history predates the province itself, and no figure has brought those contributions more sharply into focus in the public imagination than Violet King Henry. 

As we celebrate individual stories like Violet’s, we need to acknowledge that there are still many examples of the challenges facing Black lawyers and citizens in Alberta. We encourage you to engage with resources and events in person or online that explore the experience of Black lawyers and Albertans. 

Violet King Henry was recently featured on Historica Canada’s Canadian Heritage Minutes.

Alberta Access to Justice Week

Alberta Access to Justice (A2J) Week takes place from Feb. 5 to 9 this year. Over the course of the week, justice sector organizations will be offering a variety of events and activities across the country highlighting the importance of justice, the barriers to accessing it and the ways we can work together to break down those barriers. The 2024 theme for Access to Justice Week is Promoting Pro Bono. Alberta's pro bono clinics and organizations are on the front lines of improving access to justice in our province and they fill an important gap in the legal profession. Consider volunteering with an Approved Legal Service Provider to help provide pro bono legal services to the public. 

Lawyer Directory Update

The Law Society continues to work to modernize and enhance our web-based tool the Lawyer Directory. The Lawyer Directory is an online search tool that provides the public with a quick and easy way to find a lawyer in Alberta. 

With the recent changes to the Lawyer Portal navigation, the Lawyer Directory is also now mobile friendly, making it easier to use for Albertans across the province who may not have access to a desktop device.
