"Education is the catalyst for progress... the foundation for the success of not only our students, but our entire region," says Dr. Star Rivera-Lacey, the president and superintendent of Palomar College and once a community college student.
San Marcos is home to both Palomar College and Cal State San Marcos, providing opportunity for all North County students.
Palomar offers not only a path to four-year college but also direct career training programs, health career paths, professional internships, and much more.
Dr. Rivera-Lacey says Palomar college has something for everyone. Nearly 45% of students receive financial aid, and 70% identify as ethnically diverse.
Dr. Patricia Prado-Olmos, Chief Community Engagement Officer at CSUSM, highlights the role of higher education in the future prosperity of San Marcos and North County overall. Cal State San Marcos is growing in health and engineering fields, and "8 of 10 of its graduates choose to remain" in the area after graduation, she adds. Soon, the school will break ground on the new science and engineering building.

"La educación es el catalizador del progreso... la base del éxito no solo de nuestros estudiantes, sino de toda la región", afirma la Dra. Star Rivera-Lacey, presidenta y superintendente de Palomar College, quien una vez fue estudiante de un colegio comunitario.
San Marcos alberga tanto Palomar College como Cal State San Marcos, brindando oportunidades a todos los estudiantes del norte del condado.
Palomar ofrece no solo un camino hacia la universidad de cuatro años, sino también programas de capacitación profesional directa, trayectorias profesionales en el sector salud, prácticas profesionales y mucho más.
La Dra. Rivera-Lacey afirma que Palomar College tiene algo para todo mundo. Casi el 45 % de los y las estudiantes reciben ayuda financiera y el 70 % se identifica como étnicamente diverso.
La Dra. Patricia Prado-Olmos, Directora de Participación Comunitaria de CSUSM, destaca el papel de la educación superior en la prosperidad futura de San Marcos y del norte del condado en general. Cal State San Marcos está creciendo en los campos de la salud y la ingeniería, y "8 de cada 10 de sus graduados deciden quedarse" en la zona después de graduarse, añade. Pronto, la escuela comenzará la construcción del nuevo edificio de ciencias e ingeniería.

En medio de las medidas represivas contra la inmigración en todo el estado, los inmigrantes indocumentados ahora enfrentan otra amenaza: perder su cobertura médica.
El gobernador Gavin Newsom anunció a mediados de mayo una propuesta que cambiaría significativamente el acceso a Medi-Cal para los inmigrantes indocumentados mayores de 19 años a partir de 2026. El plan incluye la congelación de nuevas inscripciones, la introducción de una prima mensual de $100 y la eliminación de la cobertura dental y de atención a largo plazo.
La medida, que se espera que ahorre al gobierno más de $5 mil millones, debe incluirse en el presupuesto estatal y ser aprobada por la Legislatura de California antes de que pueda entrar en vigor.
