Changes to: NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) Program Eligibility (R15)

Definition of an R15
Supports small-scale research projects at educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the Nation’s research scientists but that have not been major recipients of NIH support.

The goals of the R15 are to:
  • support meritorious research,
  • expose students to research, and
  • strengthen the research environment of the institution.

Awards provide limited Direct Costs, plus applicable F&A costs, for periods not to exceed 36 months. This activity code uses multi-year funding authority.
UNLV meets the criteria and eligibility requirements for the NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions for the non-health professional components.

As defined in the Notice Number: NOT: DOT-OD-19-015, UNLV meets the three criteria:

1) The applicant institution must be an accredited public or non-profit private school that grants
baccalaureate degrees in biomedical sciences.
  • UNLV is an accredited public school that grants baccalaureate degrees in biomedical sciences.
2) At the time of application submission, all the non-health professional components of the institution together have not received support from the NIH totaling more than $6 million per year (in both direct and F&A/indirect costs; i.e., the Total Federal Award Amount cited on a Notice of Award) in four of the last seven years. A year is defined as a federal fiscal year: from October 1 through September 30. Note that all activity codes are included in this calculation except the following: C06, S 10, and all activity codes starting with a G.
  • UNLV's non-health professional components have not met the ceiling of $6 million in any of the last seven fiscal years.
  • The SOM and health professional schools are still not eligible due to the fact that UNLV has received more than $6M in 4 of the last 7 fiscal years within these fields.

3) Qualifying academic component (school, college, center, or institute) within an institution (e.g., School of Arts and Sciences) has an undergraduate student enrollment that is greater than graduate student enrollment.
  • UNLV has an undergraduate student enrollment that is greater than the graduate student enrollment in all academic components.

Global Medical Grants
Pfizer Global Medical Grants (GMG) supports the global healthcare community’s independent initiatives (e.g., research, quality improvement, or education) to improve patient outcomes in areas of unmet medical need that are aligned with Pfizer’s medical and/or scientific strategies.

Pfizer’s GMG competitive grant program involves a publicly posted Request for Proposal (RFP) that provides detail regarding a general area of interest, sets timelines for review and approval, and uses an internal Pfizer review process to make final grant decisions. Organizations are invited to submit an application addressing the knowledge gaps as outlined in the specific RFP.

For all independent medical education grants, the grant requester (and ultimately the grantee) is responsible for the design, implementation, and conduct of the independent initiative supported by the grant. Pfizer must not be involved in any aspect of project development, nor the conduct of the independent education program.

 Specific Area of Interest : The intent of this grant opportunity is to support educational programs for gastroenterologists, gastroenterology fellows, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and all other healthcare professionals involved in the care and treatment of adult patients with IBD.
